• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been reading about medications for depression and some of the side effects are downright scary, especially the one that links anti-depressants with suicide. My 19 year old is seems to be struggling with depression. Does anyone know what our family doctor is likely to do as far as treatment goes? Will the treatment be drug based or other?

Your doctor will most likely give you options for treatment. Mine started out treating me for my ADHD because that can cause you to be depressed due to the frustrations that come along with having it. From there they might look into treating for both if needed.

It might take several different medications until you find one that works. When you have the right meds for ADD/ADHD your not going to be a zombie or hyper. Everything just kind of levels off for you.

I don't know what your doctor will do, but I would agree that he's more likely to treat the ADHD first and see whether that affects the depression.
There are a lot of drugs available, and if one has side effects I'm sure she'll change to another.
Praying for your son and for you

Yes, I suspect the depression is linked to his ADD. He has had struggles with depression off and on since he was in middle school. Thanks for your prayers.

God bless you and your son. I pray that everything is helped as a result of your doctor's visit and possible medications.

Faithfully,

I am in similar situation with our son. He dropped out of school a year ago as a result. Recently the GP prescribed Prozac, which after three weeks seemed to start having a positive effect. Regret to say after a few months he stopped using it and got involved with wrong friends, and started using mariuana, despite our best efforts. Ironically, the weed seemed to help as well, but we are praying against the use.
Hope that helps. It's not easy dealing with these things. Be blessed.
