• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

is anyone else scared of going to the dentist???
I'm usually fine with it... but im really scared to go now because of everything i have heard about purging stuffing up your teeth... doesnt that mean dentists can tell if someone has been/ does purge?

I havent been to the dentist for about a year and I am due for a visit/checkup... but im too scared to go... My dentist is a family friend... these family friends are the ppl that my family is closest to... we do everything together... if he figures out what i am doing... then he would tell my mum and probably his wife... I cant have them know that... and sooo... im too scared to go and have my checkup... :sigh:

is it true he would be able to tell?

:sigh: sorry to say this love..but yes they can tell...thats what happened with me...my dentist had to put this stuff over my teeth to try and stop the damage from getting worse...they didn't tell my mom though, I don't think they are allowed to...but I'm not sure what will happen if your parents are friends with them

You'll have to go to the dentist eventually Beautiful (hey! At least you're not getting wisdom teeth pulled like me in a few weeks :o). You're old enough now to make your own decisions though too - I'll be praying either way sis .

I know that you do not really know me as I am new to the forum, but the dentist can tell whether or not you have had an eating disorder...sorry. I have been to the dentist 5 times in the past year for problems with my teeth related to throwing up. Curently, I have weakened the enamel on my teeth so much that my tooth cracked. I am sure this is not of help, but maybe it answers your question.

oh bother... how long does throwing up for your teeth to be damaged? does anyone know...
thanks freedom song for letting me know that!
Umm. I think that it only took about 6 months to a year. Sorry... I know this does not help the situation and probably makes things worse. When my dentist first discovered it I was scared to death that I would have to tell someone. Hang in there.

hi,

you might be fine to go to the dentist, i guess it depends on your teeth for each person, i was terrified of going because i had bulimia for about a year and a half and had only been better a few months when i thought i should go (it had been 5 years!!) anyway the dentist said my teeth were in great shape so you may be the same too, guess it depends for each person but doesnt mean he will definitly know, mine didnt so hope your the same

my teeth had been aching a LOT and I was convinced that the enamel was going so i relunctantly went to the dentist for a "check up" under the guise that i hadn't in a few years and thought i may have holes in them cos they were very sensitive. i've been pging since last may so i figured this had to be the reason.

anyway- she said they were fine and nothing wrong with them and that there were no holes. she didnt say a word about my enamel thinning etc etc so i figure they are ok, or at least she thinks they are. i still worry though because they still hurt despite changing toothpaste to the sensitive teeth kind.

anyway- good luck...

Try using a toothpaste with a higher flouride content than the regular kind. they usually go under the guise of "for sensitive teeth" like sensedyne or colgate has a sensitive teeth one too. just turn over the tube and look at the ingredients list where it'l tell you the fluoride content and you can compare it to others with less.

it all helps...

try getting the denstist to give youa fluoride treatment- it's gooey gel stuff in a mould that you bite into and rest your teeth in for about a couple minutes- it's supposed to strengthen your teeth and he shouldnt think twice about it cos my old dentish back in my home country used to do it as a matter of course for all his patients.

Even if he is a family friend, try talking to him if he notices about it he might be able to be pursuaded to not say anything about it for a while until you figure out what you want to do. From experience though your parents will take it better if it comes from you than if it comes from him...
