  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I must tell you to put so much emphasis in denominations is pure folly. All churches that teach the truth of Jesus as the way to salvation adn have policies and rules laid down by Jesus are churches that are part of the body of christ. Thus many churches accross all denominations are part of the same heavenly body and we should not have such factionalism between us. I would advise you to pray of the issue and to read the bible more, try to learn what does God really teach and really expect from his churches then you can go and find one that wholly agrees with the word of God. It is important to understand that God expect each of us to attend a church but also that each of us take his or her own part in the study of the word so that you may be prepared for false teachings and information. So that you may be armed with your own body of truth.

Welcome to the Body of Christ!

I was just a little older than you are when I accepted Chist and began my search for a church and remember how daunting a task it seemed to be. During my search for the "right" church/denomination, I found that there can be a lot of difference in worship styles at churches within each denomination. My suggestion is that you keep an open mind and visit any and all churches that interest you. Talk to the pastors about what their denomination believes and teaches. After you have plenty of information, and with plenty of prayer, you can make your own decision about what denomination is right for you.

p.s. Happy Birthday!

Here are some things to think about: Do you know what you believe about grace vesus works as the way to get to Heaven, whether or not you believe in once saved always saved, and if you believe the Bible is completely accurate and is inspired by God? Do you want to attend a religiously liberal or a conservative (Bible-believing) church? Do you want to attend a church that is fundamentalist (judging spirituality by externals) or evangelical (relying on the Holy Spirit to makechanges in the heart)?

If you do not know about some of these issues or terms, we would be happy to explain our views about what the Bible says. We can also tell you some denominations that would fall into various categories (tho there are possibly a few differences in individual churches). Also, you could consult the CF "Congregations" forum, and the CF wiki (a real timesaver).

Those things I mentioned are watermark issues between denominations. Once you know what the Bible says about these issues, you could ask pastors as you call around to churches, to see if that would be a possible church for you. Then you could also ask them what type of a worship service they have. Many have two types of services, one is much more informal than the other. The search isworth it. And congratulations on having trusted Christ as your sinbearer. It is a wonderful life, and a wonderful eternity.

Grace alone; once saved always saved; completely accurate and inspired by God; I want a Bible-believing church who isn't too strict on what I can see in theaters, etc.; not sure about the last one.

ok, sounds like you are looking for a conservative, evangelical denomination. (Good for you!) Because you want one that is not too strict on what you see in movies, that leaves the fundamentalists out (the judging by externals bit). Although all churches would probably encourage one to lead a holy life.

The only denomination that I personally know that fits in to what you have said is the Southern Baptist Association. Even there, a pastor could be different, so it would help for you to ask him the questions I asked you.

In addition, some non-denominational churches would also fit your beliefs.

Perhaps someone in here can tell you of other denominations as well that fit into your guidelines.

Also, if they have home Bible studies, that is a great bonus - a good way to make supportive Christian friends and learn more about the Bible at the same time.

I'll pray that you will soon find the church the Lord wants you to attend, friend. :)

I've recently accepted Christ, and am looking for a denomination (because, however you look at it, even nondenominational is a denomination...). I really enjoy singing for a large part of worship, mixed with preaching... any suggestions?

If you lived here in New Zealand, I'd suggest you find an Elim Church. That's pretty much what you're looking for.

However, I'd say don't worry about denominations. That is nothing. Just find any church that teaches that the Bible is the absolute and final authority. You'll be pretty sweet after that.

The advice already offered here is very good, and I too share your profile of convictions. May God bless you and keep you in them!

I'd add just one comment and one significant question:
There is far more variety within mainstream evangelical denominations than there is between them. Purely in terms of information about the subject I'd recommend the essays on the page religioustolerance.org, but the bulk of information there might confuse you more than help you. In the end the best advice is still to pray, shop around and find a placed where you are both loved as a brother and spiritually fed.

My question would be regarding your family. I seem to read between the lines that your folks aren't particularly active believers, if they believe at all. So I ask, what kind of background do you come from? What kinds of churches have your parents or grandparents been part of? Even if you've come to the Lord without their direct influence, you might still find that they are a bigger part of your life and identity than you realize, and that might have a significant effect on what kind of church you might find best in terms of a "spiritual family". That being said, another word of advice would be to never get involved in any church that tries to separate you from your biological family, especially while you are still in your teens; that if anything is a sign of cultic tendencies.

God bless you in your search!
