The word that is translated "possesed" in the King James Bible, is in fact better translated "demonized". I am not even sure if any human being can truly be "possessed", in that they have no control over their will as you describe. But both non-Christians and Christians alike can be demonized to varying degrees.
Even if a person is demonized and in need of deliverance, they always have control over their will, and can choose to not do as the demons are prompting. But the demons lie to them and compel them to behave as they (the demon) want, and the person believes they truly have no choice. But they do. They can choose to not do it. That is why non-Christians are able to get free of things like drug addiction and alcoholism, etc.....they make a decision to stop the behavior. But they always have the compulsion, that is why they realize they can never take drink of alcohol again, because they know that they will fall right back into it again. The demons are still there. Deliverance takes away the compulsion.
Can a Christian be "possessed"? Certainly not. But can they be "oppressed" or demonized? Definitely yes. The Holy Spirit resides in our spirit, and the demons cannot touch our spirit. But they can inhabit our soul or body, which is an entirely different matter, in which case they would need to be cast out either by an experienced deliverance minister or by practicing self-deliverance.
