  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Democrats wobble as pressure to end shutdown ramps up

Maybe Republicans feel that certain things are worth the price going up. I know my mother said as much applies to her. She realized that the benefit temporary ( the enhanced that is) and realizes that time is up.
Eggs going from $1.50 a dozen to $5 is "the price going up." Medical insurance going up to over $1000 a month is for many a death sentence--and the executioners are Republican Congressmen, Senators, and the president.

How can you be so cavalier about your mother realizing her "time is up?" My children would never settle for that...

Her time is not up again she realized the enhanced benefits were temporary and as she is in her early 60s she knows what enhanced and temporary mean. They do not mean forever OR completely gone.

Ironically, by leveraging human suffering. How quaint.
Yes. And Republicans, then, would be complicit in that.
As stated, the human suffering brought on by that budget will be significant. THAT'S on Republicans...if human suffering is ACTUALLY something you care about.

See, Republicans are okay with suffering during the shut dowon AND they are okay with suffering from the outcome of this bill. Frankly, they are fighting for the suffering IN this bill...and those changes would (should) be FAR more long lasting.

The Democrats are willing to have a bit of suffering to negotiate less suffering later.

All this as an aside there is actually several billion in reserve funds that Trump is able to authorize in an emergency like this for SNAP benefits, but he doesn't seem willing to.

Shutdown standoff: Why experts say the Trump administration is sitting on SNAP funds

The party of punishing the poor is at it again. Gee golly.

It's funny reading the Dunning Krugering about economics as people hope that "welfare folks not getting food stamps" will lower the prices of food since supply will be higher.

No one is arguing that your mom wouldn't know what they mean.
The argument is that's gonna have a big affect on your mom's health and she could and should fight for it. Or at least people who CARE About her could advocate for it.

Sounds like you're totally cool with that.

so then why would she ( and others not argue for the government to re-open so they could work on a deal. Republicans need 60 votes they have ( even if they were to vote as a single block 53. They need the democrats help to re-open the government. The republicans have said they are willing to talk when the government opens back up if they run out of time it will expire and then both sides lose.

No way was the GOP going to allow more illegals to received taxpayer funded healthcare nor support a 1.5. trillion dollar new spending package including trans, LGBTQ, or DEI funding in foreign countries.
Great. Because health plans for illegals is not what's happening. Neither is this about funding "LGBTO or DEI".

If they are willing to talk then, they would be willing to talk now.

Fact is, they won't be willing to talk then.

and in most states if you riot and loot if you get shot it is going to be considered justified. This is true even if the person who shoots you is a civilian.
It probably depends on the situation. Just like some police officer shootings are ruled as justified, and others are ruled as manslaughter or murder. I recently saw a news story about a couple of armed numbskulls who tried to rob a gun store. The owner of course was also armed and shot one of them while the other one ran away. I doubt the owner will be charged.

Not in SC. That stuff does not float here. We will ask Trump for NG on every street corner. Democrat violence is a definite no-no, and would crash on them hard.

I like how you took the time to explain why you'd make the pronouncement.

It's my favourite thing cause why should I listen to that? No point. Gimme something to sink my teeth into if i'm "Factually incorrect".

It's exactly what is happening, they included those points knowing that given their campaign promises there was zero chance the GOP would say yes. The same political tactics were used at the border by party leaders--the play to their base was that the border was safe, secure, and closed. By the way, what they also don't tell you is that the 1.5 trillion is for only seven weeks.

Absolutely false

Republicans falsely tie shutdown to Democrats wanting health care for immigrants illegally in the US

As the U.S. headed for a government shutdown, Republicans repeatedly accused Democrats of forcing the closure because they want to give health care access to immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
"Democrats are threatening to shut down the entire government because they want to give hundreds of billions of dollars of healthcare benefits to illegal aliens," Vice President JD Vance said Sept. 28 on "Fox News Sunday."
President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican members of Congress have repeated this line.
It’s wrong.

yes, but usually in a riot is considered justified sense it usually involves ( or at least has the chance to involve arson and/or assault with a deadly weapon. Two things that would justify lethal force outside of riots as well.

I don't know which particular source this is, but going to the same sources that have been spreaders of hoax after hoax is not logical. Do you know the old saying, "Fool me once . . ?" Let me mention there were over 2 million non-citizens receiving Medicaid before the big beautiful bill became law. Democrats consider them still legal due to Biden administration polices. The GOP tightened up the wording in the law to prevent loopholes that allow taxpayer dollars to end up paying health care for illegals. Why do you think the Democrats are still demanding the wording in the new law be removed? It's the same tactic they use over and over, while people were pouring over our southern border and they were even secretly flying people in, they told their base the border was safe, secure, and closed. It took some Republican senators getting past the secrecy and recording what was going on, and then the Texas governor busing people to Democrat cities in order for some to realize they had been lied to:
“They’re angry… They’re frustrated that the Congress — at least in the Senate — is focused on paying for health care benefits for illegals as opposed to paying their paychecks for the great work that they provide to the American people.” (Watch)

Be prepared to help her with her medical bills if she is left up the creek without a paddle. And remember which party caused the carastrophe.

This has been clarified. Green card holders with a path to citizenship and refugees whom we are morally obligated to help can get some benefits. All others can't.

People poured in from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, and Bolivia etc saying they're seeking asylum or refuge. If that's what it takes to get on the US benefits ticket, that's what people are going to claim.
