Because you're just a part of everyone. You're not everyone, and you don't get to screw up the commons for your own selfish reasons.

Why not? It's everyone's to screw up, and I'm a part of everyone.

If Bob down the street can't do what he pleases with the property that he (as part of everyone) owns, then he doesn't actually own it.

If you screw it up, you deprive everyone else of their common property.

That's correct. He doesn't. No individual owns the commons. Nobody really owns anything, anyway. You just rent from the government; try not paying your taxes if you don't believe me. Even if you had absolute control over your property, that control is limited in nature -- limited by your own mortality, if by nothing else. Theoretically, I own a house. In reality, I just own a mortgage; the bank owns most of the house. And if I don't pay my taxes, the county will own my share of the house. And if I manage to stave off the bank and the county till I die, I still have to die, and I can't take the house with me. Ownership is pretty much an artificial concept.

A look at my signature will tell you how I feel about it. I abhor it in any form, to the point I'd like to even do away with social security altogether. It's MY money that I earned, so I should spend it how I see fit. The last thing I want is the gov't taking my money and redistributing it. Good bye to motivation, innovation, ambition, freedom. I don't want other peoples redistributed money given to me, it's theirs, they earned, they can do what they want with it. Want more money? Earn it, don't go whining to the government to give it to you. Take responsibility for your life, have initiative, and make of your life what you want it to be. In summary, socialism makes me want to puke!:p

Isn't socialism why you don't work 16 hour days for $2? Wasn't the 19th century unfettered capitalism with it's sweatshops where we would be now if it wasn't for socialism? Just wondering!
