I noticed this when we bought my wife's Windows 7 laptop. It was a first for me. When I got my laptop earlier this year, it was the same. It bugs you until you create the discs or you tell it to leave you alone. I made the discs in both cases just in case.

Never bothered with that, I just format & do a clean install using my existing ISOs that MS give me.

I generally do something like this. It helps to not reload all the garbage that comes with PCs these days. My wife and I have had several Compaqs so I know all about that.

What can I say...Compaqs are cheap!

I've had HPs and Dells. They come with plenty of their own garbage. Although my old HP laptop had a nice battery tool that improved the battery life of my laptop tremendously.
Yup. Every now and then a manufacturer will give you something actually useful.

It does not like windows XP and will not install it over windows 7.
The problem is that windows 7 crashes often, and will not run all of my older software. Also HP only seems to be interested in updating things in windows 7.Pout.

I do tech support for a living. Non specific, non sourced "answers" like what you posted are a pretty big pet peave of mine.

That's like saying "oh, just throw in the disk...should work" basically. If you are telling someone to "install over" with an older operating system, you will have to give a ton more detail than what you did. It is far from cut and dried.

I could put up a whole laundry list of things that could go wrong if they went and did what you said if you like.

About not running some of your older software, try running it in "Compatibility mode"...
About the crashes, have the machine checked to make sure that there is not something wrong with the hardware.

What version of Windows 7 do you have? Some of them can run what is called XP Mode.

Download Windows XP Mode

Or you could download VMware Player which is a free program that will allow you to run up to 8 virtual machines within your laptop. It works with pretty much any operation system, including XP.

Download VMware Player 3.1.4 - FileHippo.com

Is your HP still under warranty?

Tell us about a situation where Windows 7 crashes. If you're looking for help, we'll need a good bit more detail.

Does that work with open source or just MS?

I was referencing VMware.

I just checked the online manual and it says it will run on MS and Linux. I'm not sure if it will run on anything else.

You will need VMWare Fusion for Macs. There is also a product called VirtualBox which works on Windows, Linux, Mac and Solaris too.
