The Nicene Creed (with scriptural references)
Begotten of the Father before all ages. (John 1:2)
Light of Light; (Psalm 27:1; John 8:12; Matthew 17:2,5)
True God of True God; (John 17:1-5)
Begotten, not made; (John 1:18)
of one essence with the Father (John 10:30)
by whom all things were made; (Hebrews 1:1-2)
Who for us men and for our salvation (1Timothy 2:4-5)
came down from Heaven, (John 6:33,35)
and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, (Luke 1:35)
and became man. (John 1:14)
John 1: 2
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2. The same was in the beginning with God.
3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Here we have some great information about God at the time of the creation. No mention of having to believe this to either be a Christian or to be saved.
Psalm 27: 1
1. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Very inspirational. When a person is on the side of God then there is nothing to fear. No mention of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
Matthew 17: 2, 5
1. And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2. And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
3. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
4. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
5. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Works against the Nicene notion of the Trinity, but that is a different topic. No mention of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian. What does "True God of True God" even mean?
John 1: 18
18. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Another verse that works against the notion of Trinity (different topic). Again, no mention of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
John 10: 30
29. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
30. I and my Father are one.
Another verse that works against the notion of Trinity (different topic). Again, no mention of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
Hebrews 1: 1-2
1. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2. Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
No mention of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
1 Timothy 2: 4-5
4. Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
5. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Another verse that works against the notion of Trinity (different topic). No mention of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
John 6: 33, 35
33. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
Because we have other verses which explain that salvation is dependent on belief is Christ I will accept this as further support of that. A very positive message in my mind, but not one that defines a person's status as a Christian. Essential doctrine = yes. Proof of Christian status = no.
Luke 1: 35
35. And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
No mention in these verses of this affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
John 1: 14
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Again, no mention in this verse of it affecting salvation or your status as a Christian.
What I am finding is that the Nicene Creed is really just a statement of this-is-what-we-believe. And a great deal of it has already been filtered through human interpretation so that we are getting the information with a built-in bias.
