Define Evil Music

I'm a metal guy, my favorite sub genre is Thrash Metal, what is evil or anti-Christ is Black Metal, which I don't listen to.

What is your definition of evil music/bands/singers and why?

First I must define the difference between good and evil: God's law, which in principle hangs on love for God and neighbour as yourself.

I will take the position that everything not evil is good.

I'm not sure how exactly one defines music, but I don't think music itself can be evil.

Some lyrics are evil, as they obviously represent ideas opposed to godliness. For example if a song has lyrics advocating murder.

Singers and musicians are evil if they are not born-again Christians, same as with everyone else.

From a Christian perspective, i would imagine anarchist punk would be seen as evil. The lyrics to songs like 'So What?' and 'Reality Asylum' by the English band Crass would make most Christian's have a heart attack!

This is such a hard topic for all of us since music is such a part of our daily lives. Pretty much any music that glorifies evil could be considered evil. I love bands like Motley Crue and Van Halen but I cannot say in good conscience that their music is not evil. Most of it glorifies immoral sexuality. It may be tame by today's standards but it is still glorifying evil. For me I have to kind of pick and choose what to listen to. The hard part is when unrighteous songs become nostalgic, being that they were the soundtrack to your life. You may see them from that angle and try and ignore the themes associated with the songs. Either way we need to be careful and not allow dark spirits a pathway into our lives.

There is no such thing as evil music. They're are musicians and fans who take the music and decide to do evil things with it. This is often the case in black metal, where you have fans who think the imagery and satanism is real, when in truth maybe only 5% of black metal musicians that use satanic imagery are actually satanists. As I said, they're are evil acts and evil people, not evil music.

The first think that pops into my mind when I hear the words evil and music is everything that's on MTV that every single videoclip is full of nearly naked girls, rich men and I honestly do not understand how people can watch this trash, I find it dead boring.

Another evil music that I can think of is.....Marlyn Manson even if some of his song are good(musically speaking) I believe that everything that injures your relashionship with God is to be considered as evil.

I really don't consider any particular music as 'evil'.
However, I do try to stay away from any music that appears to contain an anti-Christian message, or promotes something that goes against my beliefs.

Being a self-confessed Rivethead, I actually LOVE technical industrial and metal...

I don't think any music is wrong, per se... except Justin Beiber.

What makes music evil is the intent behind the music. Let us take away all lyrics for a bit and stick with just the music. Take progressive synth or trance. They (usually) do not have words in them, and are a great example. Can one of these songs be described as "evil" or "Christian" or "Buddhist" or "Fill-in-certain-ideaology"? Some would argue no, as it is the lyrics that make a song "about" a worldview. I would disagree. To me, it is about the intent of the song. If a song is intended to worship the Devil(even if it has no words), it is evil. It was originally designed that way. A song that is intended to glorify God is a "Christian" song, IMO. So for a sogn to be "evil" its original intent must be one that does not seek to glorify God. That means that a lot of my favorite bands are "evil". Do I still listen to them? Yes! I love Boston, Styx, ACDC, Mumford and Sons, and a whole lot more.

That seems quite absurd. So 99% of all music to you is evil.

Exactly.

But a lot of that same music is good. Good and bad are relative terms. Righteous and evil are absolute terms(from my worldview). Mumford and Sons has great music! As does Styx and Eric Clapton. They are good artists and I thoroughly enjoy their music. Then there is bad music. Ke$ha and Justin Bieber come to mind.

Well, bands that are "satanic" so to say, like Bathory, Deicide, Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir, etc. Its mostly the Black/Death Metal scenes that are "evil". Some Deathcore bands are like this as well. I avoid them all together. I love Carnifex, but I didn't like their Hell Chose Me album. I love Behemoth, but some of their songs have Satanic themes (They are believers of Thelema, similar to Satanism by definition).

Also, another thing I've noticed about the inter-webs is that some Christians claim that music that doesn't worship God is evil. False. They may not share my beliefs, but they can still make positive music. Or not all Christians make Christian music. But typically they'll be positive in consideration to the music. For example, Phil Labonte of All That Remains was kicked out of Shadows Fall for holding Christian beliefs. All That Remains isn't a Christian band, but Phil writes very positive music and some actually are Christian-centered

Evil music would be music with a bad influence ... music that pushes the use of illicit drugs, violence and sex. Evil music could also possibly be demonic/dark/Satanic. Evil bands would be considered those which sing and perform said music and the same goes for their singers. Evil is a broad category, however.

I think music in itself is insrinsically (hope I spelled that correctly) nutral. I also feel that all music comes from God. It's only when man steps in that the idea of making music that might have a negative effect on someone becomes possible. My personal guideline is the same as many others who have posted here: if a certain artist (for me - Justin Bieber, Slayer, Sandi Patti, to name a few) or genre (rap, yddish klezmer, etc.) makes you feel bad, simply don't listen to it.
