If I were to describe Christianity in one word, it would have to be: "grace."
God graciously took the punishment for our sins upon Himself so that we could spend eternity with Him through our faith in what His Son, Jesus, did on the cross. But God didn't stop there, He also deposited the righteousness of Christ into our "account" and gave us His Spirit to live inside of us when we accept Christ!
In an "everyday" scenario, think about a bloke who's name was Jim. Jim gets his monthly bank balance and finds out that he's in debt. And when I say debt, he's really in debt. Millions of dollars in debt. Anyway, Jim's starting to fret and get really nervous wondering how he's going to pay back this massive amount and then he suddenly get's a call from Bill Gates.
And Bill tells Jim, "I heard about your situation. Do you know that massive debt that you have?"
"Yeah Bill, I know that," replied Jim.
"Well, I've just paid the whole thing for you."
"Wow, thanks a lot Bill!" Jim replied, estatic about what he heard.
"In addition to that I've also deposited two million dollars into your account to get you started again."
Needless to say, Jim was pretty stunned. This is grace.
Grace is getting something that we don't deserve (in this case, Bill paying Jim's debt) and even more (Bill depositing two million dollars into Jim's account). God has similarly erased the debt of sin that we owe Him by having His Son's blood shed on the cross and when we accept Christ into our lives, He gives us Christ's righteousness and His Holy Spirit comes and lives inside of us. The whole biblical message can be summed up in this word of "grace." Or more accurately, two words: "Amazing grace."
