  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok guys, I have a dilemma. I am trying to decide whether I should get a notebook system for class or buy some upgrades to put my rig to 1337 status. I am having a hard time deciding too. The notebook would be good, because both my wife and I could do class work at the same time, and I can take the notebook with me to class.

I am just looking for something to do the job, not really play any games on it. Heck, most of the new games will not run on notebooks as it is. Nevertheless, this leaves a problem. My current system is only a 1.6g and will not be able to run all of the new games coming out. Therefore, I could sink the cash into puter upgrades and be able to play the games, but still have to share the system.

What do I do?

How much are you willing to spend? If you spend your money correctly and in the right places, you can get a laptop and upgrade your system.

For $90 you can find a new mother board and AMD 2000+ chip at tigerdirect.com. Just switch your old mother board & chip for the new one. Just keep the rest of your hardware. And for $60 you can get a 60 gig Hard Drive.

If you don't want the notebook to do much, buy a second hand one or something that is a bit older. No reason to buy brand new when all you're really gonna be doing is word processing and using the itnernet. IF you want to buy a new laptop, elementcomputer.com has a decent laptop for $849. The only problem is that it comes with a Linux distro installed on it, so if you want windows you have to install it yourself.

Actually, I was looking at going Intel again. Granted the AMD's are cheaper, been using a 2600 XP for the past year, but I was "christened" with Intel. I am ready to go back to Intel for various reasons. I have been browsing TigerDirect for the past few hours now. I am thinking I might hit a puter show and look for a laptop there. I really do not need anything powerful to do basic stuff. I have a nice desktop with surround sound and a 19" monitor for that. :D

Nevertheless, thank you for the input. I have used Linux before, (the thought of watching my wife's head spin as she tries to use it is amusing. ^_^ ) but I'll probably stick with Windows just in case she was to use it.
