  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We do good to remember that false christs isn't just a hypothetical, messianic claimants have been around forever. They were around before Jesus and after Jesus. Two significant post-Jesus messianic claimants include Theudas who led a failed rebellion (not unlike other failed rebellions such as that of Judas the Galilean decades earlier) and also Simon Bar Kochba almost a century later.

Wikipedia has a pretty good list for many of them: List of messiah claimants - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This isn't just some warning about "Way in the future, be careful" it was a statement about the reality of false things which Jesus' followers will always have to keep an eye out for. And, as it turns out, many have been led astray by false messiahs.

This is also true.

So far, it seems to me to be a case of theology driving translation? Please forgive me, and correction is welcome if I am wrong on that count.

Which might be a more interesting observation than what I originally sought.

Thanks everyone. I'm still looking for input, particularly if there is reason to see this in the original text and the translation is NOT theology driven.

Of coarse it's somewhat theology driven. The KJV was translated for a specific reason (ie for use in the Anglican Church). Such does not by implication make it a bad translation but it was translated to coincide with the emerging theology of the Anglican church. I doubt it would be possible for anyone to translate without a theological slant.
Without a doubt it differs from the Greek but not so much as to make it unfounded. The addition of "if it were possible" was a wise addition as with that phrase it does not change the meaning of the passage. It also denotes that the elect are not exempt from being tried by those speaking untruths.

Now onto who are the elect? God knows. We only hope. Meaning; If the elect are deceived, good chance they were not the elect.

Thanks MC and CryptoLutheran and MamaKidogo. :)

I appreciate those and all good points.

What surprised me most (reading 3 posts it's probably not unusual to focus doubly on the last line among them all) is that I especially agreed with

Now onto who are the elect? God knows. We only hope. Meaning; If the elect are deceived, good chance they were not the elect.

I'm not a Calvinist, by any measure. But I have a feeling they just might find truth in this statement as well?

Interesting. :)

Thank you all!
