  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I don't think it is. I actually appreciate the religious motifs in it.

If you're worried about the character Light Yagami, then I can say that I see him as another part of the motif. I see him as an Antichrist-like figure: Someone who is exceptionally gifted intellectually and socially but is so arrogant that he sees himself as a god after having a taste of real power. Not sure if this was intentional or not but it really does add to it.

It makes me think of how many great works were fully or partially inspired by Christianity that most people today don't really think too much about.

Pretty much exactly this. I love the show, actually, at least up to episode 25—the chess game-like suspense circling around the "I know he knows I know" conflict between Light and L is genius and I couldn't always tell where it would go. And somehow all the characters are sympathetic on some level—even Light.

Deathnote is the reason my wife likes anime. She swore it off before she met me because she thought it was all Pokemon and giant robot suits. But we followed Deathnote when it originally aired on Adult Swim oh those many years ago, and now I've gotten her hooked on a bunch of different shows. We lean towards the mini-series style that has an ending though, like Deathnote, so it's kind of a bummer that they don't keep making episodes of some of our favorites. But if they tried, they'd probably ruin it.

To answer the OP, though, there's nothing wrong with the theme songs or the show itself. It's a great story about moral choices. Just because Light is the "star", doesn't mean he's the "hero" you're supposed to root for, and that's what made the show shine, in my opinion.

Did you guys hear that the Death Note musical is coming to America soon? I've heard the demo tracks released and I love them, definitely check them out! "When Love Comes" seems like it would be from the end credits of a movie, it's so pretty! (the fact that Rem's actress in the demo song is one of the women who played Elphaba in Wicked is also really cool)

For those who haven't heard the songs, here's my favorites:

When Loves Comes

Where is the Justice?

Stalemate

Playing His Game

They're Only Human
