  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Facts, evidence, reality can all take a hike if they don't conform to his personal beliefs.
Whose beliefs should I conform them to? an agnostic's? atheist's? scientist's?

Coming from someone who doesn't display a faith icon, you've got a lot of gall to be critiquing someone else's.

It's your prerogative, of course; just don't expect me to keep a straight face.

ETA: Your profile is a doosey. 30+ years as a Christian, yet an atheist?

And you wonder why I'm not going to take you seriously?

Don't conform to any belief. Just follow where the evidence leads.

Coming from someone who doesn't display a faith icon, you've got a lot of gall to be critiquing someone else's.

What does that have to do with the discussion at hand?

What does my personal profile have to do with the discussion at hand, ja?

I really don't give a rat's bottom about you taking anyone seriously. The reality is - many people here don't take you seriously.

It's pathetic that people like you can't think for yourselves. For you, it's always about conforming, and being like others, and groupthink, and a whole slew of anything but thinking for yourself.

I wonder how much of that is due to some sort of brain irregularity from repeated indoctrination as a toddler and young child, making permanent impressions on young, forming minds.

^_^ ... Is that why I'm [allegedly] on FSTDT?

Who else around here thinks the Flood waters are on Neptune?

And I take it you're a stand-alone thinker?

Does E=MC[sup]4[/sup] in your freethinking mind?

If not your point can take a hike, parrot.

Yup.

Facts, evidence, reality can all take a hike if they don't conform to his personal beliefs. The main problem is that he sees absolutely nothing wrong with that mindset. Amazing, isn't it?

When I first joined this forum I could have swore that he was an atheist poe... but now... dear sweet jesus... that's some seriously commitment to the gag if it's true... I'm beginning to fear that he is actually being serious.

I'm running out of tolerance for idiocy. So, I'm going to get back on topic.

BTW - Whenever I witness such vindictiveness, it calls into question that person's particular religious faith. Not that they don't have religious faith. More on what it has done to them as a person. This isn't an indictment on all theists. This isn't even an indictment on all Christians. Clearly, there are plenty of theists and Christians who do show a happy heart and a kind soul.

The fact that he must defend such fantastically ludicrous ideas to bolster his religious beliefs gives him a nasty, spiteful disposition, IMO.

And end up like you? not a chance!

And as if to prove the point, this is your reason for rejecting any sort of evidence. It is emotionally unacceptable to you. That is a child's way of thinking. You are in your 50s (I think). It is time to start facing the fact that reality isn't interested in your emotions and grow up.

Here's a great talk given by Sam Harris. In it explains the potential implications for religions if death is the end. "If we're right, and nothing happens after death, every religion ever devised is false."

It's bit long, but worth it. Enjoy! :)

Sam Harris - Death and the Present Moment - YouTube

Eckhart Tolle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I find it rather amusing that his "good news" related to death (we should learn to appreciate and live in the present moment) happens to exist in pretty much every religion (and a few good books) on the planet. :) Go Sam, go. :)

It's the highly 'evangelical' nature of his belief system, and few of his "cheap shots" that weaken his overall presentation, but he's one of the least objectionable of the "new (evangelical) atheists". On the other hand, his "zest for life" is in fact a rather "practical" solution to his death problem. :)

Proof of Heaven: A Doctor’s Experience With the Afterlife - Newsweek and The Daily Beast

Then again, even people in his own field seem to disagree with his "scientific" assessment. It all seems to come back to "acceptable evidence" and the very subjective nature of the concept of "acceptable".

And...

The "guided meditation", where he has the audience close their eyes and talks about being an "observer" of one's breath/gravity/feelings and finally the external world is practiced in virtually every religion on the planet. :)

This isn't just "new atheism", this is "new age atheism". ;)

i can't because it is a corruption of what physics and biology have to say on the matter of origins.

"Living things (even ancient organisms like bacteria) are enormously complex. However, all this complexity did not leap fully-formed from the primordial soup. Instead life almost certainly originated in a series of small steps, each building upon the complexity that evolved previously: "

Evolution 101: From Soup to Cells - the Origin of Life

As I also mentioned, the thermal vent and other ideas have risen also...

"Scientists are exploring several possible locations for the origin of life, including tide pools and hot springs. However, recently some scientists have narrowed in on the hypothesis that life originated near a deep sea hydrothermal vent. The chemicals found in these vents and the energy they provide could have fueled many of the chemical reactions necessary for the evolution of life. Furthermore, using the DNA sequences of modern organisms, biologists have tentatively traced the most recent common ancestor of all life to an aquatic microorganism that lived in extremely high temperatures — a likely candidate for a hydrothermal vent inhabitant! "

Evolution 101: From Soup to Cells - the Origin of Life

Of course the universe also is claimed to have come from a little hot soup!

" Our universe is thought to have begun as an infinitesimally small, infinitely hot, infinitely dense, something - a singularity. Where did it come from? We don't know. Why did it appear? We don't know. "

Big Bang Theory

"
In the Beginning there was Nothing
And then Big Bang!
The Cosmic soup expanded and cooled
the particle zoo was born in the goo
photons, bosons, gluons, gravitons
Energy radiation-Watch Out!"

The Big Bang, Nucleosynthesis, and the Formation of Structure

Behold the theory!!!!!!

Wear it evos will.

Ask a Catholic ... they'll have a reason to laugh at you.

But you won't, will you?

(I hate to say this, but I wish a Catholic would show up right now and put an end to this garbage you guys are on about right now.)

If Catholicism is so great, why don't you convert?

Evos can do it in a closet.
Be honest. Creation is taught in school as...Darwin's pond, or some silly version of it like a crevice or thermal vent, etc. Primordial soup is what they condensed the universe and creation of life to, both! Get suspicious people, consider the source! Snap out of it.

"Condensed the universe" and "creation of life" have nothing to do with evolution, nor does it speak of it.

You are lying and/or fabricating the definition... I mean, there really nothing more to say...

It simply doesn't.

-blather-

abiogenesis, the hypothesis that life arose from inorganic matter, and the big bang theory, a theory on the early development of the universe, are not the same theory nor does anyone claim that they are. they are two separate proposals in two separate fields about two completely separate things.

you keep insisting they are the same thing even though time and time again you have been show how ridiculous your claims are.

Cosmic evolution is related to the big bang, be honest. I ooze truth. The first lifeform is what all things evolved FROM according to evilution. Ask a lurker.

Hows them apples?
