  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For me the silver lining of the quarter system is taking more classes in an academic year, since we have three terms each with its own schedule rather than two. There are so many that are of interest to me, and the three quarters expands my range to fit them in. It definitely cranks up the stress levels having to complete considerable work for each class in a condensed time period every term, though.

Another negative aspect of it is that the quarter system is virtually obsolete; the majority of universities in America have been using semesters for decades now. Many summer internships, external study abroad programs (vs. ones operated by Stanford), and work opportunities are structured around the academic year calendar for the semester system. Colleges with semesters typically end in late April or early May, and begin again in August. Earlier this month I found out I landed a coveted summer internship, which I hadn't expected to get because it's so dauntingly competitive. The snag is that it begins in May, and the spring quarter ends in June. I'll need to take a leave of absence next quarter in order to be able to seize the internship opportunity. If I'd applied to intern there in the spring, it would necessitate being off campus for both the winter and spring quarters because of the schedule conflicts. I didn't apply for the fall because it would throw my schedule off kilter for next year. It's a good problem to have, but it's still one I have to figure out soon.

Hi,

It is so good to hear that the quarter system, with it's natural impediments to long term learning is being done away with.

To learn, forget and relearn within a semester, helps with long term memory.

Understanding of anything happens in threes, with time in between, one and two and finally three to allow that to happen, hence possibly, Bachelor's, Master's and finally Ph.D., types of degrees.

Although, always watch out for naturals, they are better than all of the above when found.

Ramanujan, of India, in Mathematics is just one of them.

Naturals, if allowed academically, in life, in governments, in industry and in education, improve those fields always.

LOVE,

Congrats again on getting the internship!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on finishing the quarter too. That must feel GREAT!

Oh yeah - I definitely get that, and I think that fact was behind Mich State's move to change to the semester system. Finding a summer job in June was much harder when all the other schools have a month's head start.

Congrats on the internship. Too bad you have to lose a term of school to take it. Will that impact your overall schedule of classes? I know a few classes I had were only given on certain terms and they were prerequisites for other classes. One was only offered spring term EVERY OTHER YEAR.

The only advantage of the quarter system in regards to summer internship and employment opportunities is that we are available to work into September. Occasionally that is a benefit. Last September I was hired by my secondary school to teach the choreography for their dances this year, and it was a lovely experience. My mom hired several of my brother's pre-law friends for late summer internships. I don't know if other students who don't have that hook up were as fortunate. This year I'll hopefully attend this special program at Stanford called Sophomore College in September. I'll find out later this spring if I've been accepted.

I'm still working on my schedule and deliberating everything for the internship. It's a golden opportunity. It would be putting me on the ladder for what I want to do with my career in my 20s, and would give me very important connections. There are more classes that are only taught in the fall, and would mess up my schedule for next year. Taking a leave for the spring quarter would throw things off a little but not as much. I was planning on taking some classes this quarter but my parents forced me to drop down to the minimum number of units for full time status because I was really sick for the first couple of weeks. I was planning on taking the two classes I'd dropped this upcoming quarter. I think it will all work out. I transferred in a whole year's worth of credit from the dual enrollment and AP classes I took in high school, so I've got room. The main thing I don't want to miss out on this spring is joining a sorority, haha. I've been extremely excited about it. I can join in the fall, but still.

Hmmm. I do not know what the "Greek" society is like these days or on your campus; but in my day it was just a way to get organized parties with frequent drunkenness and sexual hookups. (not where I wanted to go)

I got rushed to about 3 frat houses and the first 2 were a real bust. The third (Triangle Fraternity, aka Delta Delta Delta) claimed to have other engineering students and seemed to be much more low key than the others. But in the end decided not to join.

Give it much prayer. It sounds like a great option.

There are fantastic philanthropic and networking opportunities with sororities at Stanford, in addition to positive social benefits. It's a genuinely caring and supporting community that I'd like to be a part of, and feel no qualms about. As an example, a Chi Omega sister was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia last fall just before her 20th birthday, and the ISC (Inter-Sorority Council) rallied to support her. They organized a bone marrow registration drive that hundreds participated in. I'm not even in a sorority yet but girls in the one I plan on pledging fundraised for the LA Marathon last month to join me in supporting two foundations for medical conditions I have, and are doing so again for the SF Marathon.

When my brother and his girlfriend were in college she landed an internship with Senator Dianne Feinstein after meeting her through a sorority dinner her granddaughter (her sorority sister) planned. Other young women have landed jobs through connections they've made networking. Yes, there's still parties but that's not exclusive to the Greek society, and each person can decide on how to conduct herself. I could attend those parties regardless as to whether I'm ever in a sorority.

I got rushed to about 3 frat houses and the first 2 were a real bust. The third (Triangle Fraternity, aka Delta Delta Delta) claimed to have other engineering students and seemed to be much more low key than the others. But in the end decided not to join.

Was ∆∆∆ coed back then?

Give it much prayer. It sounds like a great option.

Thanks. I'll probably go for it, and just return to campus frequently for events. It's become my second home, so when I'm at home I'm still homesick. I love it even more than I imagined I would.

No. Triangle is still not coed as far as I can tell.

I am not sure when they changed their name officially. It may have been already done in 1973, or may have been in the process. Their symbol now is an equilateral triangle with a cap T in the middle of it. When I was rushed the new symbol was already in front of their house. They explained in the orientation their former name of ∆∆∆.

If there is a ∆∆∆ now, it is NOT the same group. (either that OR the rush guide was wrong in identifying them as ∆∆∆ )

Hey everyone. How come this is one of the few active threads in College? I'm stopping in here because I'm procrastinating on work :) Have people finished with midterms at this point?

I haven't rushed and by this point it's probably too late, but I already have a few families on campus. A sports team should be another one if I feel like it in the fall.

Thanks for the link; it helped to clarify things. Triangle is a fraternity, and Delta Delta Delta, also known as Tri-Delt or ∆∆∆, is a sorority that was established in the 1800s. They are entirely separate but have very similar names and symbols, hence the confusion. To my knowledge Tri-Delt has always been exclusively for women, but I thought perhaps they had an outlier chapter on your campus in the 70s or something. That's not the case after all. ∆ is the Greek letter for Delta. It's used in several fraternities and sororities. I've kind of become an honorary sister of Delta Gamma at a college in LA because my best friend and several others I love are a part of it, and they also use ∆. ETA: ha a friend just Tweeted a picture from when I joined DG for their beach day. See the triangle? :)

Welcome to CF!

Ha, I'm most often on here either when it's extremely late and I'm procrastinating going to sleep or when I am procrastinating delving back into my work. The activity in this section often barely has a pulse. I wish it was more lively. Maybe you could help to liven it up. :)

My college is on the quarter system, so our schedule is a bit wonky in comparison to ones that have semesters. We just began the spring quarter yesterday and will finish it in June.

What year are you in? I would love to be on a sports team if I had the level of athletic talent needed for it at my school. We have Olympians. I do play intramural sports purely for fun, and I'm an equestrienne and dancer.

Yea, so why did you pick the school with the most NCAA championships instead of somewhere that concentrated more on academics?

EDIT: Doh! I mixed up the championships of your school and your second choice. You did opt for the more academic over the most championships!

Still there are only 2 schools with over half as many.

OK - that means my rush guide got it wrong.
Good to know the true story. Thanks.
See the triangle?

Indeed. Having studied NT scripture, I am somewhat familiar with the Greek alphabet.

Nice pic!

I'm still deliberating on my final decision, which has to be made by tomorrow! :stress: That's the last day to add and drop classes for the spring quarter without penalty. I decided to enroll for the quarter despite the scheduling conflicts so I could talk with my professors about possible resolutions, and reap some of the social benefits of being on campus now. Many students at Stanford encounter the same obstacle with coveted summer internships beginning before our spring quarter ends. My professors generously agreed to let me take make-up exams, but warned me of the additional challenges they would entail. I'd take the final classes remotely (they are video recorded and uploaded to Axess), while simultaneously moving to DC and starting my internship. That would be difficult. I'd have to fly back to campus for the make-up exams, and they'd likely be harder than the original ones my classmates will take. My advisor and parents have urged me to drop the classes and take a short-term job opportunity instead that is enticing so I won't risk overexerting myself or tanking my grades. One of my classes, Human Behavioral Biology, is taught by the famous (at least on our campus, because his lectures are incredible and mind-expanding) Dr. Robert Sapolsky, and I absolutely love it. He only teaches it in the spring quarter every other year, so if I drop it now I won't get to pick it up again until 2018. All of my classes this quarter are fantastic! I might end up converting to part-time status, keeping the two classes that are offered infrequently and dropping the rest.

It's a spectacular time to be here, with the campus being glorious and heaps of amazing activities happening every week. In order to go through formal rush and pledge a sorority this quarter, I needed to be a full time student. On Monday I got my bid. :) I'm beyond elated!

I have an AP exam next month & finals. I've got the exam for my music certificate too. It's a lot for one month! I just got hired for a summer job that was supposed to start in June but now they want me to start in May. I think I'm going to have to drop everything but school, music & work. Kiss my social life goodbye till summer.

Alright everyone, who's got finals coming up. What are you doing to prepare? :cool1:

You posted this a couple of weeks ago, and since I believe you go to a college on the semester system, hopefully by now you've already taken your finals and gone from this :study: to this :hoho:. Do you have any smile-inducing plans for the summer? :)

It's still midterm season at my school, but fortunately I've finished mine and can now shift my concentration to completing papers and projects. I dropped a few of my classes because of scheduling conflicts, but am staying satisfyingly busy with the ones I'm still in and my temporary work project (dance choreography), which I'm loving. I'll be starting my internship in DC at the end of this month before our final exams, so I'll return to campus to take make-up ones in the summer.

I definitely know what it feels like to have a dizzying stack of work piled up in front of you. What helps prevent me from becoming incapacitated by anxiety and dread is to triage commitments and focus fully on completing one objective at a time. AP exams are first up, so I'd put the majority of your concentration on them. Then turn your focus to finals, then to music. Perhaps you could ask if you could start your new job later in the month. Congrats on landing it, by the way. :)

And remember to:
