I have been thinking about deacons and the term deacon

Is there an equivilant word or concept in Hebrew?

does the term Shammashim really capture what the duty if today's deacon is?


Also if anyone can render in Hebrew Shammashim for me I would
very much appreciate it.

How does one become righteous without being a servant?

I dunno... I just took a shot at it. There isn't a word for 'deacon' that I know of in Hebrew. Tzaddakim tends to encompass all of the qualities and characteristics listed for 'deacon', but again... its really just an association, not a translation.

A shamish is essentially a servant to the congregation. In some congregations where I hae been they were the greeters, ushers, and generally the one you went to when you found something needed doing, from TP in the bathrooms to adjusting the sound system.....
