Saying that they are "working on it" brings science into disrepute? Why I think it would greater harm the case for science if he had said they weren't working on it, claimed to know all the answers and therefore weren't going to bother searching any more. Sound familiar?

Well, here's the heart of your misunderstanding. You want an explanation for how the world got here? Fine: a giant dog excreted it.

There. One explanation, as ordered.

Not satisfied? Maybe not all explanations are equal, or even worthy of consideration. Maybe we want more than just any old explanation. Maybe we want something that makes sense, something that we can verify, something that predicts things about the world we live in that would be falsified if those predictions turned out to be false.

Science has a pretty good idea about what happened in the early universe, how planets and stars formed, and how life diversified on an early Earth. We don't know much about exactly what caused the universe to start expanding in the first place, or even if that question has any meaning. We have some idea how life first arose from non-living things, but no firm theory yet.

The point is, I'll take an honest "I don't know" over some cooked-up mythology anytime.
