I recently received some kid's educational materials in the mail and it had Noah's flood dated at 3500 BC. Most sources I have seen date it much later. Does anyone know the rationale for the 3500 BC date?

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You take Bishop Usher's calculation of the age of the earth as 4000bc or so, add up the dates in the Genesis genealogies and viola. Tho I've heard more along the lines of 3000 or 2500 bc.

I'm not quite certain on exactly how they show the date since a literal worldwide Noah's Flood isn't an idea I subscribe to. I just know that they genealogies are generally how such dates are found. Um... if you have some time you might be able to just look and add up the ages when Adam begat a son, who begat another son at such and such an age, et cetera until Noah was begat and the Flood happened in his Xth year.
