Paul, are you aware that the Vatican and recent Popes have come out again and again in support of evolution? Evolution is acceptable for Catholics accoring to Papal encyclicals Vatican statments, Papal statements, and more. Please do read what our Holy Father has written about evolution. He has written extensively about it, supports it, and doesn't see it as causing any problems for Christian faith

Here is a large paper overseen by the Pope on this:

Cardinal Ratzinger and International Theological Commission on Creation and Evolution

From it:

Your icons says you are a Catholic. Do you disagree with the Popes here?

In Christ -

Papias

Papas, you and other theistic evolutionists are suffering from a massive misapprehension. I and many other non-fundamentalist Christians, including Catholic scientists, many on the site from which the post is taken, see absolutely no obstacle to Christianity or theism in general, in Evolution. It is just that the facts do not fit it by a long chalk. As a gratuitous conjecture, like many others with many flaws, it's fine.

Just read that post again, citing as it does chapter and verse, as to why it is no more than a compilation of Just So Stories.

In a word, Papas, a resounding, if respectful, YES! I do disagree with il Papa Benedetto on this matter. As a matter of fact, I think it is high time that the Church recognised that Evolution is a busted flush.

But you have to see where the Church is coming from. They must reason, why get involved in a controversy that does not bear on the faith. It matters not to the faith, one way or the other.
As a result of wicked mendacious PR, the Church is still the victim of gross misinformation concerning Galileo and his own personal faith. He is regularly referred to as if he were an atheist whose idea the Church bitterly opposed. The truth is much more interesting and very different. As regards his own religious beliefs, he remained a most devout Catholic all his life. As a young man, such was his love of truth that only his powerful father was able to prevent his training to become a priest.

I consider myself as Catholic as anyone, but what matters to me most of all (by an order of magnitude) is to be a Christian and a lover of truth. What other Catholics might think of my Catholicism can't be helped.

Then why would you post a document full of so many lies?

Scientists determine what is science by what they use on a daily basis... and they (biologists in particular) use the theory of evolution on a daily basis. Therefore, evolution is science. Unless you mean something else by "Darwinism."

No, they don't. A survey of scientists, no doubt with biologists well represented (it could even have been of biologists), was taken and every one polled said that they had never had occasion to have recourse to the theory of Evolution in their work.

I like your sales pitch. (Not so much the snake oil) Pity you couldn't get: 'Buy one, get one free' in, though. It always creases me up, after I saw an American cartoon of a tall American bible salesman, complete with solar topi, offering to a robe-clad, urban-hatted Iraqi peasant, sitting on the ground, two bibles for the price of one, and when he declined, shooting him.

* Dons his white suit, white top hat and walks up onto a stage while twirling a cane. Fair ground music plays whimsically in the background *

Step right up, step right up. What I have here for sale today is the inexcusable, unbelievable, incomprehensible. You know about those budget cuts, you know about that tax revenue and how its not up to par! Our loss is your gain. What I have here for you, today, and today only, I just did not believe and triple checked to make sure that yes indeed, yes indeed we are selling the Brooklyn Bridge. We need the cash injection and you'll get a cash cow. Already built, already done and toll booths ready to go. If you can close in the next hour I can even toss in the San Francisco Bay Bridge for nothing more than the paper work processing cost!

And I repeat, if you believe the current Theory of Evolution is pseudoscience then I have a bridge in good shape to sell you...half price...today and today only.

Dizredux, I'll let you into a secret. It wasn't witty in the first place. It's too hackneyed. Try again.

Apparently, London Bridge was once fraudulently sold to a rich American.

Problem is this thread isn't about origins of life, but I understand your need to muddy the waters.

Pardon me, but I was labouring under the evidently mistaken impression that your words, '... explain life as we know it', included both its origin and nature, both of which remain total mysteries to science.

Muddy the waters, old chap? Oh, no. I believe in a division of labour, as so well-exemplified in hunter-gatherer societies.

You muddy the waters.
And we'll clear them up.

Deal?

Could you translate that into language?

If you both agree that the natural processes are sufficient to explain life as we know it, you must know a lot more than atheist scientists, who admit they can't explain the origin of life, all of whose attempts to prove abiogenesis having resulted in complete failure.
What does the origin of life have to do with evolution? Different subjects.

Apparently, London Bridge was once fraudulently sold to a rich American.

And a quick google search, you know, fact checking shows that... no. An American purchased the Rennie's bridge. There was a rumor that he thought he was buying the London Bridge. This rumor was denied and never had any evidence going for it anyway. The Rennie's bridge was taken apart, shipped to California, trucked to Arizona and reconstructed.

Fact checking, its something you should do before spreading urban myths.

I would love to see this survey. I am a biologist and what you just posted is certainly not in line with my professional experiences.

I just try to establish a connection with people through what I have in common with them rather than view this as a war of words. Even some of the people I disagree with most in matters of evolution have similar positions as myself in other topics. I can disagree with or even hate a position a person has without in turn feeling that way about the person who has it so long as I establish some amount of agreement.

Remember when we first talked? We weren't truly rude, but we weren't as civil as we are now ;)

Isn't that the truth. I have truly come to like you as a person and feel we have grown to understand each other much better. We did have some issues early on though. :p

Show me how you can clear the muddy waters, with something other than your opinion, personal experiences or other people's personal experiences.

Ready, go.
