I thought it'd help if I tried bouncing ideas around a bit. I'll try organizing this by a few basic categories: setting, universe, characters, society/politics/religion, other notes
-----
Setting: The best idea in my head is one expansive continent of immense size with diverse landscapes, cities and towns and a series of islands to the east with more isolated landscapes, cities and towns.
Universe: A lot of this is going to be a combination of Chinese philosophy (mostly Daoist), some Chinese folk religion and traditional Chinese medicine terms, listed below
Characters: I only have a few in mind at the moment, but it would definitely cover a wide array of occupations and livelihoods. One important character would be a martial artist, focusing mainly on Tai Chi Chuan, possibly also incorporating other kung fu, ranging from neijia (internal style) to waijia (external style).
There could definitely be a jiangshi (reanimated corpse controlled by talismans) user as well as someone fighting with talismans to control the elements, among other possibilities that I'm not fully aware of.
There should clearly be a xian character, someone who's achieved some level of Taoist immortality and serves as a mentor of sorts.
And I've long been thinking of a character that will be important later on, coming from the islands to the east. They'll be using more modern weaponry, a katana and a bokken, virtually unheard of in the western continent.
Society: The western continent will be more traditional in its approach to Daoism and its practices, while the eastern continent will try a more modern approach, incorporating philosophy and the like. The katanas and other Japanese injections I'm putting into the series would be explained as modern terms that try to approach Daoism and such from a more analytic angle than what those in the Western continent would do. But of course, there will be counterexamples in each continent, some in the western continent thinking that the traditions are becoming archaic and some thinking the eastern continent's methods are too stringent and sterile.
The biggest things that will be a focus of all the characters, kind of like in One Piece's variable ideas of Justice and the similar search for One Piece itself, are the Taiji and Wuji. Taiji would be like Justice in that everyone seeks a different form of its Supreme Ultimacy, whereas Wuji would be One Piece in that people don't really know what it is, but they know it has no bounds, as one translation is Boundless Ultimate, I believe.
-----
I still have to work on names for a lot of the locations and characters, but I'm trying to set up a foundation in the universe itself for the characters to be fleshed out
Here's a list of terms associated with the universe
