  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Daniel 3:16-18

KJV 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. 17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

Daniel 3:16-18New English Translation (NET Bible)16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to King Nebuchadnezzar, “We do not need to give you a reply concerning this. 17 If our God whom we are serving exists, he is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and he will rescue us, O king, from your power as well. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we don’t serve your gods, and we will not pay homage to the golden statue that you have erected.”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

16 Because they were officials they were questioned about their actions if they had not been officials they would have just been put to death without allowing them to speak for themselves. They knew what they were during.

17 They had faith that God would rescue them from the furnace or any other thing that the king would put them though for serving Him first over the king. We may ourselves be confronted about our faith one day and could be life or death. Jesus died for the Faith we should be honored to follow after His actions if we are lead. God is first. They knew that the true power was not of the king or anyone else in this world but the true power was of God.

18 Even if the Lord does not rescue us we need to stay true to Him thru faith even if we are not rescued even to death of this life. Keep the Faith to the life with Him, the life that does not end.

Expanding a bit, I think Nebuchadnezzar personal knew the three of them. They were trusted men in his administration and he wanted to give them a chance prior to killing them. (He was expecting them to bow to the statue and go back to work, I think.)

Secondly, we all die. It is simply a fact of life. I've know some people who lived through a harrowing experience. Some of them felt cowardly for how they acted; they were ashamed of their own conduct. One went so far as to say he would have rather died at the time than live with himself now. (But he actually carried on in life. He was tougher and braver than he credited himself.)

The idea that God will either rescue us or let us die is a somewhat misleading perception. God has already 'rescued' us. When we arrive at the Gate is the only missing bit of information we have.

The awful situation in Iraq concerning the persecution of Christians brings the reality of this situation in Daniel home to me.

I pray for them...not being able to think of how I would respond personally in their predicament, except to rely on the grace of God.
