I've learned a great deal from both and I find the quarrel disconcerting.

Don't like to incentivize drama, but I believe Fr Damick called Jay Dyer an incel a couple of years ago (when he was not married yet).

Just don't let it get to you, that is something they have to solve by themselves.

Oh goodness, yes, thank you. I didn't know if it was a theological dispute or personal. I heard the accusation of 'ecumenist' bantered about by Jay's folks.

Yeah that seems pretty low, in spite of his explanation. I'm very surprised. But it does seem to be the source of some bad feelings.

I've searched too but haven't found anything. I like that Dyer zeros in on the minutiae of theology. Although, typical of former Calvinists, he lumps all Protestants in together, which is frustrating, especially coming from someone so exact as he. Damick can over generalize but I usually default to ordained ministers if I have to choose between they and a layperson.

Uh with Googling haven't figured it out, but Dyer is something of a Frank Shaeffer Junior type extremist as far as Orthodox people go if push comes to shove error on the side of Fr. Damick and other folks. (There is lot of stuff about the problems of converts not really changing their phronema / mindset from what they had in the past after they convert and they bring all their old baggage along with them etc.)

Probably, not knowing for sure but he is Antiochian (Who have lots of convert priests) and his name doesn't look Lebanese, Greek etc.

Yes. He is a member of AFR. I had no idea that it supported liberal viewpoints.

This video of Dyer's (from almost three years ago, formerly unlisted/private until several days ago) goes through all the root causes of the current "quarrel". While on the surface it seems to be about the alleged cancellation of Fr. Tryphon by Ancient Faith Radio and a perception Fr. Damick (Chief Content Officer of AFR) and others have of certain types of internet Orthodox personalities, it ultimately comes down to the contentious war between tradition and modernity playing out in so many spheres of our lives. There's been quite a lot of discussion on this front in this forum on other threads, with others here also noticing a certain tendency AFR has to harbour or facilitate content creators with views of a more liberal stripe (as pointed out in Dyer's video as well as this previously posted webpage).

As Not David has said, don't pay too much attention to this sort of drama. The online Orthodox world is a place one needs to navigate carefully, especially if one is an inquirer or catechumen and lacks the experience helpful in discerning these sorts of things. As long as you make contact with a parish and a priest in real life and do the reading you are (or inevitably will do), you'll be just fine.

Or are they reacting to some of the extra ordinary manliness of Russian culture etc. ? Or is it something else like friction over American sociopolitical stuff?

I think that'd depend on the individual person. AFR is pretty broad.

One of the reasons tensions were inflamed recently was due to a remark Fr. Damick made during his interview on Gospel Simplicity in which he made negative allusions about certain Orthodox individuals (namely Jay and that crew). Prior to this interview, things had largely settled down between the two.

It was inflamed again when Abbot Tryphon’s blog was censured by AFR, because the Abbot’s subject matter leaned a little too traditional (and therefore conservative). The Abbot is beloved by many a trad Orthodox online, so Jay’s Hussars went back into battle with AFR. Plus AFR sells questionable content in which was written by a certain pro-abortion Orthodox author, and they’re mad that she isn’t being cancelled by Fr. Damick.

The best place to keep up with this is on the RooshVForums because it’s now an Orthodox forum if you’re into this type drama. I find it to be largely irrelevant, although it is disappointing that Fr. Damick lowered himself to take unwarranted cheap shots on a third party’s platform.

Yeah I've only listened to the first 30 or so minutes of the Dyer video / pod cast thing but it seems like Fr. Damick really stepped in it! Because the stuff Dyer was complaining about was legitimate like them featuring these ultra liberal EO people who are plugging pro LGBTQ books in the public schools etc. But he does these kinds of personal attacks defending the woman.


It really seemed like something his bishop should step in etc. because it looks really bad and undermines the witness and unity of the Faith. It's interesting because you guys are often so careful on this stuff, aka "Look to your own salvation" etc.

this is technically not true. the issue wasn't that he was too conservative, but rather that he endorsed a political candidate by name.

that said, I can see everything else.

They're both capable of doing great work, but both have ego problems that get in the way sometimes.

It was disappointing that Fr. Damick took a shot at Jay and others on Gospel Simplicity (especially ironic since Austin has done great interviews with the very people Fr. Damick was referring to), but it's disappointing that Jay can't just drop it.

But then again, I can totally understand the desire to defend your work against unserious accusations.
