• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was on a christian depression board and the leader said that her psychiatrist told her it was alright to cut herself everyday. She talked on her board like it is alright to cut to relieve stress and cutting is an illness. That it is alright to cut, everyday if needed. I don't know about this and people talking about deep cutting is making me feel uneasy. I cut and burn and self injure myself but I am trying to quit but they justify doing it. Anybody ever heard of cutting as being good therapy?

Any psychiatrist that says “cutting or slashing is ok" should have their practice taken away ASAP. Self mutilation is not a healthy way to deal with stress, depression or anything that’s bothering you. Punching a pillow is one thing, but actively hurting yourself is another.

no i dont believe that is a good thing to do.
im no psycologist or anything like that.
but there has to be a better way than hurting yourself.
you feel uneasy about the deep cutting......
WELL I WOULD TO! we have nerves in us that cause us to scream and hurt for a reason, ya know?
it isnt good to do that.

i dont know any scripture that says "dont cut yourself" but there is a better way, defined by the scriptures.

well i just thought of something (thankyou Holyspirit)
phillipians 4.6
"be careful for nothing: but in every by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."

i dont mean to over simplify things and make you out to be someone who just doesnt even know the basics, but really prayer to the Lord is the best outlet for worry, stress, depression, and all this stuff.
dont be depressed, pray.
dont be worried, pray.
refused to be depressed or whatever depression is, and pray about it, and begin to be happy, ask the Lord for gladness and be glad. tell depression to go away boldly i n the name of Jesus, when it tries to come back.
and stay in prayer, so you can stay strong.

know that the Lord has given you happiness, peace, and gladness.
i think you may just need to remind yourself that God has given you joy and peace and refreshment. and that you are not obligated to be depressed, and keep telling yourself that, untill you begin to believe it enough to take hold of it.
pray for God to give you peace, the bible says he is the God of love and peace, that means he has given you peace. he already has.

depression has been defeated, in Jesus name.

Those who cut themselves in order to see blood flowing from their body should question why such behavior gives them a very brief release of anxiety. Why does it work at least for a short time? Why did self-mutilation become such a popular fad?How did such a totally sick practice start?Blood-letting is a satanic practice and is practiced in worship services held by members of the satanic church.During their services, they kill animals and sometimes unwanted human babies by cutting of the throat. As the blood flows out it is collected in a large cup and is used in the worship service. It is Satan who has made blood-letting so popular because in his mind it's a very sick and perverted take-off of the Christian belief that Jesus shed His blood for His children.

God tells us that the life is in the blood. We are temples of his Holy Spirit and should respect ourselves as such, not to mention that we are created in His image.

I will ask you what Elijah asked the children of Israel:

21 Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him."

You must decide who you are serving.

There were 450 prophets of Ba'al ( satan) and just one of God- Elijah and he gave them a test.

22 Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the LORD's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
What does Elijah do to prove to the people who the real God is andto prove who the priests of Ba'al serve?

23 Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD . The god who answers by fire-he is God."
They both are given the same test, one bull for Elijah to pray to God to answer by fire and one bull for the 450 priests to pray to their god to answer with fire.

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire." 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "O Baal, answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

He let them go first and to show their power, of 450 calling upon their god, but what happens?

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. "Shout louder!" he said. "Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened."
He doesn't answer them after much supplication ad shouting and dancing. So what did they do? Pay attention to this carfully and see what they did because it shows what their "god" demands:

28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.

29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

Their god does not respond, not even to the blood letting. But you can see this is not something of the one true God. Finnish reading the rest of the story in 1Kings 18 20-39 and find out what the one true God did.

Blood is the life, that is why it is commanded not to even eat the blood of animals.

You are made in Gods image, if you are a believer than your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, the same as the Temple that sat in Jerusalem. Do not defile the Holy Temple of the Lord if you love Him.

I really doubt they kill babies.

It's popular because cutting yourself causes your body to release endorphins which make you feel better.

There is a real mental illness call Borderline Personality Disorder. People cut themselves and are diagnosed with it. It make about as much to call it a sin to have this illness as it is to call depression a sin. Cutting is addictive, sometimes people cut themselves when they can't express or feel the deep emotional pain that is buried inside. They would need to face the real reason why they cut and it is really hard to do. And if they were terribly abused and buried the memories, sometimes cutting is a way to try to remember the violence done to them or try to make sense of it. People blame the victims for not dealing with their problems in a "normal" way. So one tends to believe God is angry at them to and allowed the abuse to happen. Cutting for me could also be like trying to atone for being such an awful person that couldn''t stop the abuse and thought that God was angry and trying to punish me. Couldn't make the guilt go away and thought God was condemning me too. It is really hard to believe in God's love after getting so much abuse throughout my life. So I punish myself.

unless you want to be wearing long sleeved shirts for the rest of your life

i suggest you dont cut...
You only have to wear long sleeves if you cut really bad. But even if you cut at all people will be suspicious and ask and "the cat scratched me" wears out quickly, well at least it did for me but thean again I don't have a cat... maybe thats why :)

i cut too. im trying to stop. i have to lie to my doctors so they will continue to treat me without just throwing me out the door or putting me in a hospital. i dont belong in a hospital. but i cant stop injuring myself as a way to relieve the mental pain. i usually cut on my shoulders and thighs so no one will ever see it. my therapist talked to me about finding other ways to deal with my stress . . like drawing or writing or doing something else with myself like rearanging my room but i cant. if i dont feel the physical pain then the craving dont go away. i did good for about a year of no cutting but now its back and worse. the cravings are worse now. and i dont know what to do. the writing and drawing therapy dont work anymore. i have no idea what to do. how do u guys deal with it???

I take it that since nobody answered my original question about has anybody ever heard of psychiatrist saying that cutting every day is good therapy for stress that it's not good advice. I had about quit cutting for many months at a time but on that board they kept talking about cutting and I got back into cutting. But I plan to leave that site. I looked at the pictures this morning too. But what bothered me is that that is how words sometimes feels from christian brothers. (Words cut sharper than knives). Anyhow, as for me, between last Sept. 2002 and March 2003, I cut at least 4 times. I was counselling cutters at the same time on the internet. I asked my pastor for help and this is what he told me (I have only cut 1 time since then). "Until a person acknowledges that Jesus loves them and is present 24/7 they will never feel complete. Jesus came to deliver us from our hopeless situations and wants to share our lives with us. He does not like to see someone so desperate that they hate themselves enough to cut. The question is why? Why do you cut? Is there something else you could do to handle the feelings -like pray sing, write, read, walk-ect." His words really helped me to cut way down on self injuring and I'm really trying to give it up completely. That is the best advise I can give, too.

It's not ok to cut.
I don't know what kind of a moron, much less a doctor, would condone the behavior.
You go to the doctor to get help for cutting.
This is the dumbest thing I've heard.
Cutting is an indication of emotional disorders, commonly bipolar, that need to be taken care of.
Some cutters get carried away and hit an artery, thus accidentally killing themselves.
Would the doctor be ok with that?
Cutting is bad.
Don't cut yourslef.

i agree with mr cheese (i like that name). cutting isn't a good thing to do. ive heard my counselor say what someone else said 'permanent scar for temporary problem' something like that. and its true.
i started cutting 8 years ago. it used to be everyday. sometimes more than once a day. then it became only when i was really upset. well now its still 'only when i am really upset' but i cut deeper. last time i cut was in october and before that it was april. its scary when you can stop. its like someone else is doing it. i know im doing it but it dont feel that way because im talking myself out of it at the same time. i used to have a problem with biting myself, sewing myself up, hitting myself in the head and pulling my hair out. i still bite myself sometimes but i dont do the other two because i get bad bad headaches.
the doctors never diagnosed me with bipolar. do they usually diagnose ppl who self injure with that? my doctor said i had ocd because of the mutilation.
but yeah . . any doc who says that cutting is a therapy is crazy! dont listen to him. cutting is the thing your trying to get rid of!

I'm not a doctor by any stretch of the imagination. But I ask mine about SI cause there is so much of it here.
He says its very difficult to treat, and that it is usually a complement to some emotional disorder.
So it seems to be a symptom of some "bad wiring from the factory" so to speak.
SI isn't limited to cutting. I know someone who beats their hand with a hammer. I'm sure there are other things that people do too. Burning.
This is not healthy behavior. You don't need a doctor to figure that out. I don't know what kind of doctor would say otherwise. It makes me sad.
*hugs everyone*

In the past I struggled with depresstion, and I have always been a very active person. So, when i would get injured it would feel good, just because it felt good to feel something. Is this kinda what it's like for people who cut themselves?

My depression was very bad, a few times i even tried to kill myself. But by GOD's grace, i have beaten the depression in my life. If you want to know more just ask. I hope that will encourge somebody.
