Hi DRL,

I'm very familiar with Robert Schuler and the origins of the Crystal Cathedral. The point of the last news blurb is to simply point out that the majority of today's world doesn't want to put out any "extra effort" for anything spiritual including church attendence.

I might also point out that the main theme of Shuler's sermons is geared toward a "feel good" type of Christianity. People hear what they want to hear.

Respectfully, your brother in Christ,

Court: Vegan inmate's rights violated

A Massachusetts inmate had his civil rights violated by prison officials who denied him a vegan diet, a U.S. federal judge has ruled.

U.S. Chief District Judge Mark L. Wolf found that officials at Old Colony Correctional Center are required to provide vegan meals to inmate Daniel Yeboah-Sefah because of his religious beliefs, The Boston Globe said Thursday.

The ruling in favor of Yeboah-Sefah, who changed his name from Henry K. Boateng, was based on a 2000 federal statute that protects inmates' religious beliefs while incarcerated.

A lawyer for Yeboah-Sefah, who was convicted of killing his 5-year-old son 14 years ago, said the judge's ruling on Tuesday was a victory for inmates' religious rights.

"The statute is designed to protect these people who are stuck in institutionalized settings," attorney Beverly B. Chorbajian said. "We're all free to change our behavior or do things to accommodate our own religious practices. They are not."

The lawyer told the Globe that Yeboah-Sefah wanted vegan meals to ensure he followed the dietary guidelines of his Buddhist faith.

Sarkozy: No more 'yellow patches' for Jews

French President Nicolas Sarkozy praised Israel Monday as the only place in the world where Jews "will never be forced to wear a yellow patch."

Speaking before the Israeli Knesset, Sarkozy said there was a special bond between France and Israel and honored the country's role as a the Jewish homeland by quoting a Bible verse, Ynetnews.com reported.

Quoting the Book of Numbers, Sarkozy said, "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites,'" adding that Israel provides "the only place in the world where everyone is certain that Jews will never be forced to wear a yellow patch, where Jews will not be banned from traveling on buses, visiting the cinema and theater and holding certain roles."

Earlier Monday, Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni, visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, accepted a Israeli-made bottle of wine and received two candlesticks as a gift from the Knesset speaker, Ynetnews.com said.

What do you make of Matt. 7:21-23?

Do you think the people to whom Jesus was referring will feel this way?

There are a lot of people who say they believe in God while worshiping the world at the same time.

I'm not saying this is the case with you, but it is a thought that I think is worth reflecting on, because not everyone is as close to Jesus as they think they are, and many people who think they will be saved are going to end up in the lake of fire...

I believe John 3:16 where it says "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life".(NKJV) Matt 7:21-23 in context is where Jesus is giving the Beatitudes which began in Matt 5 and went to the end of Matt 7 where the people were astonished as He taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. Because the people were astonished he taught as one have authority and not as the scribes, tells me he was talking to the Jewish people.
Like I said, FOR MYSELF and told what I believe and why.

In Matt. 24 we find some of the strongest prophetic statements that Jesus made during His ministery. In verse 3 we read:
"And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the diciples came unto him privately, saying , Tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be thre sign of thy coming, and the end of the world?"
The significance of this text is that this conversation took place between Jesus and the diciples in private. This was His inner circle that were to spread the gosple, tell the world about His second coming, and warn the world of what will happen at that time. It also took place as a result of His statements concerning the buildings of the temple and the diciples response indicating that His statements sounded pretty important and how could they be prepared for these events.

However Christ gave them a dual prophecy concerning both the destruction of the temple in 70 AD and also His second coming. He also did something that all too often we overlook. That is he repeated Himself over and over. What was the repetition you ask? He keep telling the diciples, and us, by either direct stanement or by inference, that we don't know, we don't know, we don't know the "day or the hour" of His return. I don't believe that Jesus repeated Himself just because He didn't have anything better to say. Rather He kept repeating this fact because He was driving the point home. He also told some of the signs to be aware of in order to know His coming was near. If Christ put this much emphasis on this subject it is clear that we should pay very close attention to what is happening in the world around us today.

Eventhough we are saved by His grace (See Titus 2:11.), He still warns us to be carefull that no one takes our salvation, our crown, from us. (See Rev. 3:11). What should perhaps be the most important warning to us today we read in Rom. 13:11:
"And that, knowing the time, that now is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than we believed."

I pray that this will explain why I post these news stories where reading the newspaper is like reading end-times prophecies straight from the Scriptures. May we all be ready for that day.

Respectfully, your brother in Christ,
Doc

U.S. Muslim leaders feel Obama snub

U.S. Muslim leaders say likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama faces a dilemma over the enthusiastic initial support he received from them.

Some of them say even though they understand Senator Obama, D-Ill., needs to be careful at a time when many Americans are suspicious about Muslims, they still feel snubbed, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., until recently the only Muslim serving in Congress, told the Times that like many other Americans of Islamic faith he enthusiastically welcomed Obama's entry into the presidential race. But now, he said, requests to appear with the likely nominee aren't being answered.

After one such request for a joint appearance at a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, mosque, Ellison recalled an Obama aide turning down the appearance by saying, "'We have a very tightly wrapped message.'"

Obama campaign aides, however, deny there's been a snub.

"Our campaign has made every attempt to bring together Americans of all races, religions and backgrounds to take on our common challenges," Ben LaBolt, a campaign spokesman, told the newspaper.

Paganism growing fast in U.S., Canada

One of the fastest-growing religions in North America and Europe is new-fashioned paganism, a Canadian group says.

The Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance estimates the number of people practicing some form of paganism doubles every year and a half, The Denver Post reports. The group believes the number of pagans in the United States is now somewhere between 750,000 and 1 million.

Carridwen Brennan, a Wiccan, told the Post that pagans are a varied group. The Wiccans, the largest group, practice a form of nature worship supposedly carried on by witches after Europe became Christian.

"We don't really know the numbers," Brennan said. "Most witches and pagans are semi-closeted, or so deeply closeted because of prejudice we don't even know they're there."

Colorado is believed to have about twice the percentage of pagans as the national average. They include Jesse Walter, a self-described druid, who runs the Witches' Brew coffee shop in Denver with his wife, Kantis, who calls herself a pagan.

Walter, an Army reservist and conservative Republican, fulfills his druidic obligation to trees by picking up litter in a park across the street from the coffee shop and leaving offerings there.

Bishop convicted of concealing abuse

An Episcopal Church court has found a Pennsylvania bishop guilty of concealing his brother's sexual abuse of a minor during the 1970s.

Bishop Charles Bennison Jr. could be suspended or removed permanently from ministry, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.

Bennison's lawyers said they planned to appeal the decision. A sentence is not likely to be handed down before late August, the newspaper said.

Bennison, 64, became head of the five-county, 55,000-member Diocese of Pennsylvania in 1998. He was suspended in October after a special review committee of the Episcopal Church USA charged him with two counts of "conduct unbecoming a member of the clergy."

A church committee alleged that as the young rector of St. Mark's parish in Upland, Calif., in the early 1970s, he had failed to protect a teenage girl from the sexual predations of his younger brother John, who served as the parish youth minister.

Bennison testified he had been unaware of the abuse, but the alleged victim, now 50, testified Bennison had twice ignored obvious signs she and John Bennison were having sexual relations.

The case marks the third time a bishop was tried before the church court in the 232-year history of the Episcopal Church USA.

Controversial priest returns to the pulpit

The controversial Chicago Catholic priest who was suspended for mocking then-presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton has returned to the pulpit.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, told ABC's "Good Morning America" he doesn't apologize for being passionate or exercising free speech, but does apologize " when my passion or my freeness and my flawedness of character get in the way of a content which is much more important to me."

Pfleger returned to his pulpit Sunday. He delivered the controversial sermon May 25 as a guest preacher at Trinity United Church of Christ, likely Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama's longtime church, which he has since left.

While Pfleger apologized for mocking Clinton and said he would no longer speak about candidates, he said he would continue to discuss politics.

In his "Ain't Nothing Like a Comeback" sermon Sunday, Pfleger told parishioners at St. Sabina's Catholic Church he would not "run and hide, nor allow them to cause me to 'play it safe' or become silent."

Clinton, D-N.Y., suspended her presidential bid in early June.

Fox News: Jackson used N-word to refer to blacks in off-air remarks where he criticized Obama
Rev. Jesse Jackson speaks during a news conference in Chicago, Wednesday, July 9, 2008. Jackson apologized Wednesday for comments he made about Barack Obama's speeches in black churches during what he thought was a private conversation with a reporter.

By SOPHIA TAREEN, Associated Press Writer
CHICAGO (Associated Press) --

For decades the Rev. Jesse Jackson has rallied against the use of the N-word _ an ethnic slur he has repeatedly told the American public is hateful and degrading. But the longtime civil rights activist used the term in what Jackson thought was a private conversation during a break from a TV interview.

Jackson has already come under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama that were recorded during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.

In additional comments from that same conversation, obtained by the blog TVNewser and published Wednesday, Jackson is reported to have said Obama was "talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to behave."
Fox News did not air the comments, taped for a July 6 show, but a spokesman confirmed TVNewser's account to The Associated Press.

Jackson _ who was traveling in Spain to attend an interfaith conference on Wednesday _ apologized in a statement for "hurtful words" but didn't offer specifics.
"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public," Jackson said in a written statement. "There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me. I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."
A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said she could not confirm that Jackson used the slur.

For more than 100 years, the N-word has been used against blacks and is a potent symbol of racism. Last year, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held a symbolic funeral for the word, similar to one the civil rights organization held in 1944 for Jim Crow laws.

At the same time, blacks also use the term when referring to other blacks, a practice both Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton have fought. Both have called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and studios to put an end to its use.

They renewed their efforts in 2006 when actor Michael Richards was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club.

At the time, Jackson called on the public to boycott purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld," which starred Richards as the goofy friend Kramer.

Sharpton said Wednesday he wanted to hear the comments for himself and declined to discuss Jackson specifically.
"I am against the use of the n-word by anyone and I think we must be consistent," he told The Associated Press. "We must not use the word."

Anti-mosque feelings growing, analyst says

The building of mosques in European countries is being met with a backlash, reflecting growing anti-Muslim sentiment, analysts say.

Some analysts call the conflicts about mosques on European soil an expression of a growing fear that Muslims don't accept Western values, aren't assimilating and pose a security threat, USA Today reported Thursday.

"It's a visible symbol of anti-Muslim feelings in Europe," says Daniele Joly, director of the Center for Research in Ethnic Relations at the University of Warwick in Britain. "It's part of an Islamophobia. Europeans feel threatened."

The latest dispute is in Switzerland, which is planning a nationwide referendum to ban minarets on mosques, the newspaper reported. Italy's interior minister earlier in July vowed to close a controversial mosque in Milan.

An estimated 18 million Muslims live among Western Europe's predominantly Christian population of 400 million, Joly says.

Sakib Halilovic, an imam in Zurich, says Switzerland's referendum to ban minarets "plays into the hands" of Muslim extremists by limiting what a mosque can look like and denying them a place to worship.

"It will boost radical positions within the Muslim society in Switzerland," Halilovic told the Swiss Broadcasting Corp.

Christian groups seek end to in-room porn

A coalition of 47 conservative U.S. Christian groups wants Marriott International to stop providing pay-for-view pornography at its hotels.

The groups say showing sex films as part of in-room entertainment runs counter to the chain's commitment to the well-being of families and children, The St. Petersburg, Fla. Times reported Monday.

"It's corporate greed," says Phil Burress, president of Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values. "This is their ugly sister in the closet."

During a meeting with the American Family Association and Focus on the Family last May Marriott executives said the chain doesn't have the power to remove pornographic offerings.

Company spokesman Roger Conner said like most hotel groups, Marriott owns only a handful of the properties operating under its various brands. The rest are individually owned and contract privately with the firm that provides movies.

Marriott says it will talk about the issue with hotel owners.
