i have been wondering about burning calories....
is it the heavier u are the more calories you burn? and the less you weigh the less you burn? btw seems quite unfair..lol so then the lighter you are the longer you need to workout to burn more cals?:confused:

ok also with the gym treadmils, ellipticals, i find when i put in my weight , and the person next to me does theres, they always seem to burn more cals even thought i go longer and more strides..... sothen my assumtion would be i would have to work longer and harder to burn the same amount of calories?:sigh:

No, you only have to go longer. Trust me, running is MUCH harder when you're heavier. It's all about how hard you work, so you'd have to run faster to work as hard as someone who is heavier.

The only way you bun more calories is if you have more LEAN mass (muscle), then your metabolic rate is increased. If you are overweight due to high body fat %, then you are not an efficient calorie consumer. The work load is harder because the individual is overweight and deconditioned. Go running with a 10 lb sack of flour, you will not be able to go for long.

Yes it is very frustrating, but slow and steady wins the race, and helps you to stay and be healthier longer....instead of slipping back into old habits!

I have been working out and eating right for about 7 weeks and have only lost 5.5 pounds. An overweight person would probably double that number EASILY!

Then again, I've always excercised on and off so it's not really a 'shock' to my body! How much are you wanting to loose? Oh, I've noticed (for me anyway) when you take it off slower, it stays off longer. When I was 21 I weighed about 147, I decided that was just wayyy too big for me, and that's when I went on my first 'diet'(lifestyle change) so to speak. I got down to 128 (body wouldn't loose anymore after that) and pretty much hovered there for ten yrs.It took me 6 months to take it off...I prbly could have taken it off sooner, but I didn't start eating better till the last 3months, the firts 10 came off due to excercise!

After the 6mo, I ate what I wanted, worked out every now and again, but really didn't have any restrictions. I did the low carb 3yrs ago, bc I could never get 5 pounds off. I lost it, but gained it back w/in days....so I'm all for slow weight loss:thumbsup:


You can do it...patience is a virtue:)

btw-I noticed your screen name....I have 6kids....and we are DONE,LOL!!

Me i would love to lose somewhere between 8-10lbs but logically 5 would do, and that even people would think i am crazy...but for me it is more about how you feel than a number on a scale.....

so 6 kids , boys girls mixed?

i have 5 girls 2 sets of twins and a single,.....

This is a good question. O.k., the more lean tissue or your body composition being 'leaner' increases you metabolic rate, so at exercise or rest, you are burning more calories.
Next, lets say that an overweight/deconditioned individual does the exact same workout on a treadmill and a person (same gender, age) who is 'fit'. Basically they will burn the same amount of calories. Keep in mind that this treadmill program will be an easy one, so the deconditioned individual can complete it. The 'fit' person will likely not have worked very hard and the deconditioned one is sweating and red and huffing. Why? He is out of shape and is not efficient (yet) at exercise. Many changes occur in ones physiology as they exercise.
Next, the deconditioned person is now too tired to continue exercise, so he must be done for the day. Yet, the fit one is raring to go. So he can continue on exercising and burn more calories.
Or, the two people I have mentioned can workout for the same amount of time FITT principle, Frequency, intensity, time, type. Lets say they both workout on the treadmill for 10 minutes as hard as they can. Who do you think can exercise at greater intensity? Right, the fit guy, so he will burn a few more calories, but not a lot.
Next, ad a weight belt. Same thing, both individuals will burn more calories-in the same amount of time, BUT the fit guy caN GO LONGER AND HARDER, so he works at a greater intensity for a longer time and burns more calories.
Just because one is leaner and exercise is easier, does not mean that they burn less calories during exercise.
When we are overweight we cannot work as hard, we need muscle for that, and muscles consumes glycogen (glycoses) and fat (Lyposis)(sp?) for energy, fat is energy and cannot burn calories.

The machine would not know that you have a weight tied to your waist unless you input it into the computer.

Remember .. the machine is merely estimating the number of calories you're burning. My guess is it's probably doing it based on your age, weight and heart rate. That doesn't provide an accurate measure ... merely an estimate. Don't get too worked up about a number that isn't even accurate.

ok fitmom, that was a bit confusing.....but for me it really does not take much,,,

so being leaner i understand i need to work harder,,,but would a belt work? kinda like fooling the machine? or my body into thinking it weighed more not much maybe 5 -8 lbs?

Just because one is leaner and exercise is easier, does not mean that they burn less calories during exercise.......right but it just takes so much longer.....correct?

A calorie is the amount of food having an energy-producing value of one large calorie. One large calorie is the amount of heat required to reaise the temperature of one kilogram of water one degree centigrade. Make sense? Not really.

A calorie is more or less an amount of energy. The little computer does not directly or indirectly measure energy expended. It is estimated. Here's an example of how Polar calculates calories burned (Polar is a popular heart rate monitor manufacturer):

Polar is one of the better units. To do what they do requires you to enter your sex, age, and weight. You also have to take their test to determine max and resting heart rate. And remember, 220 minus your age does not work for determining max heart rate. For me ... that would be 220-28=192 ... I guess I should be dead since I've actually maxed out at 214. And maxing out your heart rate isn't fun as you feel quite ill at that point.

They use the sex, age, and weight (and, perhaps, height) to estimate your basal metabolic rate. Then use your heart rate, along with some proprietary formulas, to estimate the intensity at which you're exercising (METS). This allows them to do a reasonable job of estimating calories burned (though they seem to admit the estimates are biased high in men).

And remember, the little computer won't be able to discern the relative fitness differences between two people.

Being 'fit' means that you are able to work harder and longer, and burn more calories. Yes, a belt is a safe and effective way to burn 'extra' calories, but so is increasing the incline on the treadmill. Also, working without a belt may allow you to work out longer, which will increase aerobic enzymes and lung capacity, stroke volume, 02 uptake and all the physiological changes that go with effective cardio vascular training. There is not 'quick' way to gain cardio vascular ability, just hard work. This is why it is called a 'WORK OUT'.

This is not that confusing. Think of lean muscle mass as the motor for your metabolism, and think of calories or energy as the fuel. Our bodies store glycogen (carbohydrates) and fat as fuel. At rest our primary source of fuel is fat, and at work it is glycogen and blood glucose. The more lean muscle (bigger motor) we have, the more fuel we need and use. So when you start your engines and get to work, if you have a large motor, you will burn more fuel. Smaller motor, less fuel, and a shorter trip. So even at rest, a lean, mean tissue machine burns more calories. Think about it, it does not take much enery to live a sedentary lifestyle, and drink pop and eat chips, does it? This does not turn into muscle or increase your metabolic rate. This kills! Heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, weak bones, etc.

p.s. the longer you work out the more calories you will burn!

yes i agree wholeheartly with the longer you workout the more cals you will burn....w was just trying to figure out a way to burn a litle extra, i go to the gym 7 days a week ok could not yesterday,,, boohoo....no one to watch the baby. but when i do i try and do the ellipticals for at leat an hr work on that wondeful twin stmach,,,,, back on the elliptical for 1/2 hr... stair master at a rate where my heartbeat is raised, almost pewer walking. cannot jog on them feel like a spaz....so totally i am there 3hrs....and if i have time i go back later in the day....so if i could i would sleep there and the lbs are not cominf off, and now i am getting depressed and i do know its not what i am eating bc i know my cal intake .....which by now is probably neg to my exercise routine......just discouraging

ok now i am off to read that article..thanks.

yup...... ok well at times yesterday parent teacher confernce, so 2hrs, the other day went back later in the day so that made it 4 hrs......why am i not losing, could i execerise anymore?yesterday the elliptical ok i underdatnd no the most accurate but somewhat........said i burned 500 cals........then a little treadmill and stomach and left, so lastnight at a freinds agfter i ate i went on her treamill, burned ok only100 cals had a glass of wine and i am not one to drink.....so i got off..lol *** how much more can i do? is there such a thing as to much exercise i would doubt it?
