Curious about something

Hi, I am new around here but in my short time I have noticed a trend. Many take a verse or a verse from one place and a like sounding verse from somewhere else and have trouble with them. When I was early in my walk the teaching was read several verses before and after, maybe the chapter. Then think about the whole and then think about the verse and what it means in that instance. In other words read and think about the thought not the single statement.
Does the church or where ever no longer teach context. If not that can be a very dangerous and misleading slope. Like I said I am new to online forums but not to learning, do it every day.

I was never taught that at my first church, but a friend of mine who's a pastor of a small house church taught me and few others that. Context is very important!

I like to quote large passages; however many suffer from "tl;dr"

Context goes even beyond the passages surrounding a text, such as the intended audience, the culture, intent of the author, etc.

Some pastors prefer to take the verses out of context and make them neab exactly the oposite of the real meaning. One example is when Jesus did teach agaist the tithe and pastor manage to teach in pro of the tithe with the same verses.

I was very guilty of that when I was a teenager. I treated the Bible a lot like a fortune cookie through reading isolated verses and seeing a hidden meaning intended for just me personally. And yes it did lead me into a lot of trouble.
