  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

well, I was right.
My parents said no.
I wish I never asked. They lost it and I started crying.
I don’t know if I’m sinning by wanting to go to school.
I just don’t get it. I knew my parents were gonna say no yet I was stupid by hoping it to be any other way.
Maybe I’m a sinner for wanting this, am I loving the world?
I just want to finish my education. I do know two people there so that does help.
I’m so lost in confused.

Well this Coptic Orthodox priest has blessed me with this sermon that covers how to get through tough times.

The good news is I'm guessing that you are young and probably have time to work on getting that education. But take it from someone who has completed college and done grad school. It aint always what its cracked up to be. You can easily get an education but not have what you need for your career etc. So it could very well be that this is a hidden blessing. You may be better off doing more research of the career or whatever it is you want to do than just immediately jumping into college etc.

OK, that's sad. :(

But can you finish your education online, either through a formal enrolment or through something like Coursera?

Was there some specific qualification that you wanted to get?

Not all dreams are crushed equally. Some are more recoverable than others. To determine how you can recover, some of these questions need to be asked:

- What did going to that school offer that other schools do not?
- Is your parents' problem with going to that school specifically, or the specific major you wanted to pursue, or with going to school at all?
- What do your parents want for you instead? Why does it seem to be at odds with what you wanted?

I suggested online. They say I will never learn a thing that way and it’s best to wait.
As for a specific qualification, not really.

The schools offer the same. Although the one I wished to attend is a little closer. My parents’s just think I “belong with a different class of people”. And that, is pretty much all my parents want.

OK. If that's the difference, why was the school you wanted your dream? Because of the two people you know who go there? Or another reason?

Hello,

If the reason they said "no" was because of finical issues, then there are some ways that you can get assistance. I'm currently looking at taking a boot camp for UX design and depending on the course, they have a number of different payment plans, such as paying tuition through taking a percentage cut from your job for a year after you graduate.

Even if you're forced to wait, I would certainly suggest an educational wait.

You can read up on a variety of subjects to identify something specific that would interest you.

Coursera has courses which cost between US$39-79 per month: How much does Coursera cost? | Class Central Help Center

Some Coursera and other online courses are, in fact, free, e.g. 1400+ Coursera Courses That Are Still Completely Free — Class Central

Some Bible courses are also free, e.g. from Ligonier: All Teaching Series Now Free to Stream

I also saw that one of the boot camps that was offered is available for free under the CARES Act under certain conditions, so it might be worth it to try calling the CARES Act number to see if you can get assistance: (202) 622-2000. Many colleges are also making their classes available entirely online, so you can call their admissions to ask about that.
Thanks but it wasn’t financial issues

As much as I’d love to sign up for that, my parents won’t let me. I honestly don’t understand fully why. It isn’t a financial issue.
I guess I’ll just find my own studies on YouTube, Wikipedia, etc..

As I’ve been homeschooled my whole life, the two who attended do help a bit, and the other reason is that it won’t cost as much, my parents won’t to move far away to go to the other school, they didn’t want me to live there, so a new house will cost 500k, (it’s Massachusetts, it’s pricy here.) and it will add up, causing to be way more expensive than it ought to be.

Your parents won't let you sign up for free courses on Coursera?
Probably not. They want the other school like, bad.
They don’t want me to go off any curriculum unless it’s my own “free” knowledge, like cheap amazon textbooks, etc.
Until next year which we will decide of what school.

I'm not fully understanding all of your posts on this subject, but I would suggest to your parents that:

1. You want to do some online study to help identify what courses at university would interest you.

2. You want to do some online study to help smooth the homeschool-to-college transition (that can be a bit of a shock to some people).

cheap amazon textbooks

Also good.

Do you have any idea on the broad area of study you might be interested in?

So, to clarify:

You want to go to school A, and your parents want you to go to school B.
School A is farther away, but cheaper than school B.
The total cost (tuition, fees, housing, etc) of school B is much greater than the total cost of school A, but your parents are willing and able to pay for school B.
They do not want you to live near school A.

Did I get that right?

Yup, correcto.

Ummm....

What I was suggesting was that you have a conversation with your parents and say those two things:

1. That you want to do some online study to help identify what courses at university would interest you.

2. That you want to do some online study to help smooth the homeschool-to-college transition (that can be a bit of a shock to some people).

Both of those things are ways of helping their plan to send you to the college that they have chosen.

And "Do you have any idea on the broad area of study you might be interested in?" was a question I was asking you. I was hoping for an actual answer, because it would facilitate more detailed advice.

At this point I'm also starting to worry about you misunderstanding my English so often. Do you mind me asking: is English not your first language?

(because if English is your second language, your best bet might be simply to read lots and lots of books with medium-to-difficult language -- interesting non-fiction, classic novels like those by Jane Austen, etc., etc.).
