  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Howdy all(wow its been a long time)! Got a problem w/this show Crossing Over(u know the one with the medium sweeping the nation). My wife is completly hooked on this show, even wants to go(I am 100% against it)! Unlike most necromancers this guy doesnt hide the fact that he is a medium(no cutesy new age names etc) & I feel he is extremly dangerous to the masses who dont know about the dangers of the occult & or are ignorant of scripture warning of the dangers of consulting with the dead. I ask for prayers for my wife who recently had been coming back to the faith & BAM Ol Scratch throws in this curveball. Whats your take on this issue?

I think its a bad sign.

People are longing so much for something tangible or closure. I do think its a sign that a segment of our society is really falling away from Christ.

When we cannot rely on Christ's promises of eternal life with him I think we're in trouble. Of course our society is one that has to feel, see or touch things to consider them real.

But look at the shows on TV... Dharma and Greg had an episode recently where she wanted permission from her friend for Dharmas husband to fantasize about her while the couple were being intimate together. Everybody Loves Raymond is joking around about "wife swapping" tonight. Then you got this "medium" doing stuff on daytime TV.

Satan's gotta a full-frontal assault underway - we have to be vigiliant and pray for our society.

Where does it end?

DS777...you and your wife are in our prayers here.

KC I agree with you there. I know us Protestants and Catholics agree on very little, but I will be darned if we as Christians let Satanic assignments ruin our society. I mean we have all this stuff like Charmed, Dark Angel, Buffy, and so on, and worse is people eat this stuff up like it's a rack of ribs! I cautiously watched the Dateline special on exorcism some weeks ago and was surprised to find out that alot of exorcism is done by Protestants as well. But that's not my point really. I think Satan has a foothold on the media today. There is almost zero positive programming on the telly today. It's gone from great classics like Lassie and CHiPs to utter trash like Will and Grace and Temptation Island. I pray to God Almighty that we all would be delievered from this and soon!

I just wanted to say hello and ask how your family is doing. How is the baby?

I haven't heard of this show you mentioned. We never watch regular TV programming. Just Cartoons for the kids and a movie now and then for the big ppl. :) I agree with KC though, and am concerned about your wife's interest in that type of thing. Not that she watches it really, but that she seems to want to be directly involved in it. Talking with her will help alot. Be calm and don't try to 'prove' her wrong. Just tell her that the whole 'medium' thing makes you very uncomfortable. Then make plans to take her out for dinner, or a movie, or shopping, or anything during the time the show will be on. :D 'Psychic's' crack me up anyway. Like that one recently...Miss Cleo or something...always on TV and 'knows everything'. How come she didn't know to be out of the house when the IRS came with the police to arrest her for tax evasion? :D

Anyway, you and yours are in my prayers. Take care. :)

God bless...

Although I'm glad to see you, DS, I'm sorry to hear about your wife's fascination with the psychics. I think all of us go through a stage where we want to dip our toes into the occult. I "woke up" to the fact that there is really no such thing as HARMLESS dabbling. I even quit reading my daily horoscope, and I'm almost foaming at the mouth rabid about distancing my kids from that Bandini. (they are 18 and 16 now, and certainly know my views on that stuff, so I am not as hysterical as I used to be)

I have two very non-scientific observations to people who wish to communicate with fortune tellers or contact the dead. You might give them a try.

ANY of the studies done on "Near-Death" experiences reveal an incredible peace, a wonderful place that the nearly-departed were loath to leave. And, of course, everything we know about heaven is absolutely beyond wonder. So WHY would anyone want to leave such glory to return to this world to communicate with mortals? Perhaps those who wish to communicate from beyond the grave AREN'T in heaven? Hmmm. Do you REALLY want to communicate with someone NOT in heaven? (I use a variation of this argument against reincarnation. If heaven is so wonderful it is indescribable, who would WANT to come back here?????)

Best argument I've heard against fortune tellers was a hilarious spoof of "Madame Cleo" done on the extremely irreverent "MAD-TV" show. One of the characters called up the sees-all-knows-all psychic, and said, "I have just one question: What were you doing on September 10th?"

Seriously, DS, I don't mean to belittle your concern for your wife. But sometimes it takes a heaping helping of common sense and a whole lot of humor to nudge people back to where they belong.

Peace be with you,
~VOW
