  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is something that effects me personally, I would like to know how anyone else feels about it!

I dress in men's clothing all the time, at home and at work. It is much cheaper, easier to shop fore (all the sizes are the same!), it's more comfortable for me, and men's pants actually have decent pockets. Oh, and they tend to last longr being washed constantly!

What are your thoughts on cross dressing- for practical reasons or otherwise? Would you interact differently with someone that you notice is cross dressing than someone who is wearing clothing tailored for their gender?

For all intents and purposes I'm referring to cross dressing in an appropriate manner. I had a few pictures of a man who liked to wear a dress in public who looked very stunning and smart, but I seem to have lost them. It was something that fit him, was appropriate for public wear, and was not worn as a joke. This is what I am talking about.

When girls wear men clothing people give no ****, but when men wear girls clothing people all of the sudden give a ****.

Unfortunately, this is very true. Though I have gotten some very negative comments from people who recognize the brands I wear are from men's lines, it's nothing compared to what my male friends who wish to wear women's clothing have to go through :(

Yes, this is a sad problem in gender double standards. It reminds of another story but this forum tends to derail fast so I will just stay at that. :)

You're allowed to tell a story if you want :D I didn't really expect this topic to garner any interest at all, haha. It's such a heated topic with so many people.

Yep, because femininity is viewed as inferior. Society sucks.

Cross dressing for practical reasons shouldn't even be called cross dressing. Sensible pants shouldn't be a "manly" item, they should just be a sensible item.

On the other hand, when someone is wearing clothes that don't seem to have any practical use (and mostly these are marketed at women..), it can raise some eyebrows. If a guy wants to wear stiletto heels and a flowery dress (above his hairy man legs), he is free to do so, but I should be able to think he looks ridiculous without being branded cross-phobic, or whatever the appropriate term is. And a company should be able to require that employees who interact with customers wear non-ridiculous clothes, for example.

Fashion sense is not rational. We'd also think that someone who wears 15th century clothes looks ridiculous. And our irrational fashion sense has made a distinction between what men and women wear, or between what 5 year old girls and 20 year old hipsters and 90 year old grandmas wear, or between what you wear at home and what you can wear at work or at a fancy party, etc etc.

It's very true that fashion sense is very weird.

You have the right to say anyone looks ridiculous! :) I have the right to think the old guy I see in WalMart every once in a while who wears really huge shorts and bright red suspenders over a Hawaiian shirt looks ridiculous.

Yeah, you don't have to be attracted to the person at all or like what the person is wearing. Just don't bother people about it.

Heh, my wife once asked me to grab something from her jeans that she had just taken off while she was putting on some other clothes. I reached in to get it and it barely fit half of my hand. I asked her if there was a reason the pockets were so small, she said that they were normal sized. I was shocked. I can not understand how people can live with such tiny pockets!

I have no problem with people who cross dress. I really don't. I think people should wear what they find comfortable in their private lives. I do agree that in a professional setting, while exceptions should be made (IMO) on a case by case basis, businesses should have a right to dictate a dress code.

That being said, I don't enjoy being identified as a cross dresser. It's fine for those who do it, but it's not what I am.

On the pocket issue, I generally hate things being in my pockets, so I don't mind having my small pockets that hold barely more than a Tic Tac, if even that. I have a purse to hold my stuff, thank you. ;)

I don't care really. Stylish people will look good, either way. Dorky people will look dorky. Did you see Fabio Costa in Project Runway Season 10? He did some terrific gender-bending dressing, but it wasn't exactly cross, it was more combo. He was really fun and interesting to look at.

I like unisex clothes (jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes) as well as sex-specific.

Ladies' clothes do have crappy pockets, when they actually have pockets. I also despise crippling shoes - I do not understand why women support them. There should be a law that shoe designers have to wear their own designs on the street for at least eight hours.

While men don't get as much flak for wearing womens clothing, we also do have it easier in that our clothing actually makes sense. I'm pretty sure that even my smallest shorts have more pocket space than the standard woman's entire outfit.

That said, it would be nice to be able to wear a skirt on some hot days when I need to do outdoor work.

Yeah, I usually have more than would comfortably fit in the pockets of men's jeans, anyway. Their pockets are probably bigger because it's not considered normal for them to carry small bags.

Yes. At some point you may have to concede that you are carrying more than pockets can handle and prepare accordingly. ^_^

I guess they just expect that women already have an extra container for all their stuff already so we don't need pockets. I don't care if my pockets are fake, shallow or deep. I will rarely have anything in them. :D
