  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

^that kinda depends on who you're giving it to. I'm sure the flower girl would love a cute little purse to carry around(that is if she's anything like my little sister, who has a million purses), but the groom might not take so kindly to the same gift. Lol. ;)

To tell the truth I'd have to know the people I'm giving the gifts to.

^_^ Picturing guys in tuxes with dainty crocheted purses.

As for wedding gifts (shower or otherwise) I've given afghans & placemat and runner sets. They have been well received. But like Godflute said--you should match the gift to the couple you are making it for.

On a related note. I am going thru my vintage thread patterns from Celtwich and picking out tablecloths and table sets to make for my 2 kids and my nieces and nephews to pack away until their wedding days. Since the oldest of the gang I'm doing these for is 21 (and currently in Iraq :prayer: ) and the youngest is due in Aug. I think I have a bit of time.

Ladies, I'm looking for some advice.

I've mentioned here before that I would like to initiate a crochet project at our church. I will accept 12 inch granny squares from church members and stitch them together to make what I'm calling "Heart of Family Afghan".

I originally planned on requiring all squares to be made with the same color and brand of yarn. I think that this will make it easier for me when it comes to stitching it together. I am also concerned about getting too much of one color or colors which really don't look well together.

But I'm now seeing so many different kinds of 12 inch squares that it seems a shame to restrict them as to color. Yet, I'm still afraid to just let them go at it when it comes to color for the reasons I've mentioned.

Perhaps I could restrict them to 2 colors such as ecru and burgandy or ecru and navy or ecru and hunter green?

Help please!

Why not put a plan together. Like this month the ecru and burgandy and next month ecru and navy and the next month navy and hunter green or whatever colors you're doing so that people can see waht you're doing and where you're going. You might just have to trail and error on this, but have people sign up for squares, so that if you have people express an intrests in a certain afghan you can make more than one and now worry about having to many or not enough.

That would certainly work except that I want to have this done by the first of December so I need them all turned in within the next couple months to give me time to get them stitched together.

Barb,
Instead of restricting colors why not just put a border in a neutral color around each of the squares? It would provide enough of a "buffer" to keep colors from clashing too badly. I have a comfortghan that was done this way and it looks like a patchwork quilt -- truly lovely and a work of love.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have asked for squares in ecru or navy or a combination of both. If this goes well I would love to do another and just allow the ladies to have fun with the colors and see how it turns out.

I am so excited about my newest project. I have a friend who has just learned that she is expecting her first baby. I want to make something for the baby so looked through all of my patterns for something. It didn't take me long to decide on this even though it's actually an afghan and not a baby blanket. But I think it will be perfect. I am enjoying it so much! This is definitely going to be one of my favorite projects.

So here's a picture - remember it's a work in progress, just started it last evening.

It will be 12 squares by 9 squares. You can't see it but I already have 12 done in the first row.

Barb,
I would love to use that pattern in the future, as I make a lot of Baby blankets. Could you tell me how to get it?

Thanks,
Trish

Certainly! :) It can be found in the leaflet titled "Our Best Afghans A to Z". I bought it at Wal*Mart several years ago but I saw it still available at our local Wal*Mart just yesterday.

Wow, I started an blanket some years ago and I still don't have it finished. It's very big and long projects get boring after awhile. Especially since this one is all one color. I started it back when I only know 2 stitches.

It has been sooooo hot and humid here lately that I haven't been crocheting a whole lot. I have been spending a lot of time in the pool tho' :D .

Out VBS program this year has been on Sunday nights and I got roped into eaching crochet as one of the crafts. Only 2 of the girls (in 2 age groups) have stuck with it -- altho' last week one of them brought in the spool knitter she got for her birthday to see if I could show her how to use it (her Mom and Grandma had NO idea!), so I got her started on that. Most of the time I sit and play with a thread project that I pack along - a lilac doily that may wind up at my friend Carrie's house. Have to do something since one girl is in the first group and the other is in the third group of the evening.

I can't say that this class arrangement is all that great for learning crochet. My frioend Candy (who set the program up this year) had visions of these long lovely scarves that the children would have finished by the end or the summer. A ragged swatch of 4 inches may be pushing it with the way things have been going. It is not that the girls can't do it, but they have both missed nights due to vacation time and wanting to try out one of the other crafts (quilting and woodworking are also being done). And since they cannot take the project home with them to work on during the week ( or 2) between classes they are not getting far and sometimes forget what they were doing. Only 2 more weeks to go. There are no classes this week, and next week we may not make it because my husband will be at the dragstrip working a show for MacTools (which will leave us without transportation), so I will only be there once more.

On the up side of things, at a luncheon last week to say good-bye to our interim minister, one of the older ladies in the church stopped me and asked if I crocheted with thread. Her eyesight and arthritis in her hands have made it hard for her to use the smaller hooks and threads, and she is planning to give me most of her stash! She also has a bunch of wool that she is hoping to make up into an afghan this winter, but says there will be lots left over that I can have as well. My yarnwinder may be geting a work out soon.

You may remember my post a while back about the lavender baby blanket I made for a friend and then worried it would be too girly if she had a boy. Well, the worries ended yesterday when Miss Sophia made her entrance at 2:26pm!!!! Mom and baby are doing great! Sophia weighed in at 9lbs and 20 inches in length. She is a really pretty baby (I've already seen a picture). Hopefully big brother Elijah won't mind sharing Mommy, but if he does I am offering Carrie babysitting service so she can have time with Elijah.

How nice of your friend to pass on her "stash"! You can never have to much yarn or too many needles or too many patterns!

Is the lilac doily the free pattern of the day from Annie's Attic a month or so ago?
