  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

JET I thought my gentle reminder about ASH would get a response about the record of oz wins over the old country;the ashes. We could include the Davis Cup, womens hockey 5-0 win v england, squash world champions even real (Royal ) tennis. The list is almost endless. The rugby was an aberration.
I know that is what you were getting at, I was politely ignoring it :p but fear not, we will take the Ashes off you next (actually we won't, the British Cricket team is a laughing stock. The only thing that is worth watching in cricket is the commentators. "Britain is well prepared for this match blah blah, either side could win!" end of game "oh no, England have suffered another famous batting collapse" The problem with this of course is if the batting collapses are so common as to be famous, surely this just points out that the British team sucks)

one thing I will give you Aussies though is that you are Very good at sport (capital V is intentional), and even better at beer adverts!

Where do you currently live (city, country, etc)?

San Diego, CA, USA

What is your educational background and/or current occupation?

BS, Computer sciences, minors in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics

What are you current religious beliefs (if any)?

Strong atheist with regard to the vast majority of deities worshipped by humanity throughout time, weak atheist to Deist, Pantheist, and other less well defined Gods.

What was your religious upbringing like?

Little religion in immediate family, exposed to Christianity through grandparents and other relatives (some fundamentalist, some not).

What are your feelings towards the theory of evolution?

All available evidence points towards evolution as the explanation of the diversity of life, as does common sense combined with a basic knowledge of biology/genetics.

What are your feelings towards creationism?

It's the Flat-Earthism or Geocentrism of the modern era, completely unsupported by any evidence that does not also support evolution, and expressly contradicted by the vast majority of evidence (which also supports evolution).

When did you first learn about the creationism and evolution?

I didn't really realize Creationism was a widespread phenomena until I attended university. As a side note, not one of the Creationists I met at university survived basic biology (every one became theistic evolution supporters).

What sort of research have you done with respect to evolution and creationism?

Strong undergraduate background in both biology and chemistry. Engaged in debates with Creationists in a University setting. Studied (and refuted) the arguments of Creationists online off-and-on for the past 10 years or so.

Do you think creationism and/or evolution should be taught in schools?

Evolution SHOULD be taught in any basic biology class, as it is the fundamental theory behind our understanding of biology today. It MUST be learned by any advanced student in Biology, as there is simply no understanding genetic theory without it.

Creationism is most appropriate for a "Comparative Religions" class, or perhaps in a sociology class.

Do you think that you would ever change your position with respect to creationism and/or evolution?

I would be willing to change my position on either given sufficient evidence - however, given that natural selection seems inevitable given a replicating molecule, and that there appear to be no insurmountable 'middle steps' (e.g. no truly 'irreducible' structures), I find it unlikely in the extreme that evolution will be supplanted as an explanation for the diversity of life.

Cheers,

The San Diego Atheist

"Where do you currently live (city, country, etc)?"

Auckland, New Zealand :)

"What is your educational background and/or current occupation?"

Just finished 7th form for the second time.

"What are you current religious beliefs (if any)?"

Athiest, I beleive there is no god. Although really, as I know there is no way to tell, agnostic.

"What was your religious upbringing like?"

Christian. Sunday school etc, that jazz.

"What are your feelings towards the theory of evolution?"

I feel that it fits perfectly with absolutely every situation in biology, and as such is very interesting. I also feel that it has overwhelming evidence supporting it, and for the moment at least, I call it fact.

"What are your feelings towards creationism?"

I think it's on the same level as beleiving in a flat earth.

"When did you first learn about the creationism and evolution?"

I can't really remember, although from a very young age I knew that genesis had to be wrong.

"What sort of research have you done with respect to evolution and creationism?"

Read many thick books, and posted alot on forums like this :)

"Do you think creationism and/or evolution should be taught in schools?"

Creationism, no way. Evolution should be taught in biology like it is in New Zealand, where most of our 7th form biology curriculum is straight evolution and the origins of man.

"Do you think that you would ever change your position with respect to creationism and/or evolution?"

I don't think I will need too.

What is your educational background and/or current occupation?

Currently in college

What are you current religious beliefs (if any)?

Christian

What was your religious upbringing like?

None

What are your feelings towards the theory of evolution?

False teaching

What are your feelings towards creationism?

True teaching

When did you first learn about the creationism and evolution?

Learned about evolution in school, and believed it 'cause that's all I heard. Later after I was older, I researched it and found out that it's bogus.

What sort of research have you done with respect to evolution and creationism?

A lot of reading on both issues, and a lot of classes which teach evolution.

Do you think creationism and/or evolution should be taught in schools?

No, neither should be taught. Why would I want an atheist teaching a class about creationism when they don't believe it? It would be misrepresented.

If evolution be taught, though, I would think it fair that it should be taught and evaluated critically, rather than indoctrinating our students with uncontested drivel.

Do you think that you would ever change your position with respect to creationism and/or evolution?

No, I don't think so.

Do you think creationism and/or evolution should be taught in schools?
Yes
Do you think that you would ever change your position with respect to creationism and/or evolution?
I don't see why we can't believe in both. God created the Big Bang and told the story. First then earth and/or planets. Then there was light, the sun. Then, there was water and from there came life, etc... The gap can be because he destroyed the earth but saved man (Noah) or it could be aliens came down and mated with apes, who knows? We can't be the only beings in the universe. And we already know time is different here than in space, so God's idea of time must be different than what we know. God is a great scientist!

Currently retired

What are you current religious beliefs (if any)?

Christian Alumni

What was your religious upbringing like?

Northern Baptist, regular attendance at Sunday School and Church through High School

What are your feelings towards the theory of evolution?

The overall structure has been proven beyond doubt by the larger number of different scientific disciplines that provide confirnmation. The focus of current research activity is ironing out the details.

What are your feelings towards creationism?

Creationism is not supported by any scientific disciplines. It is an attempt to reconcile religious beliefs with the fact of evolution on the part of those who have conflicting religious beliefs. I have yet to meet a creationist believer who is an athiest or member of the liberal branches of Christianity.

When did you first learn about the creationism and evolution?

High School courses in biology and college courses in Comparative Religion

What sort of research have you done with respect to evolution and creationism?

Read a lot. Especially Steven Gould and Richard Dawkins books. I don't recall the authors or book titles that I have read on Creationism since I read them many years ago and found them unscientific.

Do you think creationism and/or evolution should be taught in schools?

Evolution should be taught as science since it is the fundamental cornerstone that explains much of biology. Creationism should be taught in a Comparative religion course.

Do you think that you would ever change your position with respect to creationism and/or evolution?

If the recognized experts in anthropology, geology and biology changed their minds AND presented a coherent basis for doing so, I would too. I don't expect that to happen.
