  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Travis St. Hubbins: "Any idea what he means by "fitness cost"?"
What Chris meant by it I have no idea. However, what the general phrase refers to is that all traits have a cost. No trait is absolutely good without some type of cost. "Fitness cost" usually is in relationship to specialization and refers to the trade-off of doing well in one environment while losing the ability -- fitness cost -- to do well in other environments.
So the fitness cost of the finches developing larger beaks is that the beaks are no longer as useful for catching worms for instance? The fact that the larger beaked finches are smaller than their ancestors then has nothing directly to do with their increased beak size and Chris has misunderstood and misapplied the term?

Pretty much. The finches isn't a very good example. A better one would be the hawthorne fly that lived on hawthorne trees. Now the original species has speciated to a number of imported apple trees. But some of the species can live only on particular apple trees. The generalized ability to live on apple trees has been lost in the specialization.

Hi John,

i'm going to guess at this...

i'd guess that since you are trying to help people understand the Bible better you would be more well served in a forum that is for that, say apolegetics.

as this is the science forum, and isn't concerned about the correct method of understanding the Bible, the information isn't germane to the conversations and generally obfuscates what is being discussed.

though, of course, Nathan can explain himself quite well :)
