Not sure why you are trying so hard to re-interpret the bible to fit the truth. You could just tell science to take a hike and assert that there was light in the universe "days" before there were stars like some of the more deluded creationists. It's a free country.

We both agree that the universe hasn't always existed though, don't we? But, if the universe was the something that has always existed, wouldn't the conclusion be that the universe is the 'cause' of everything.
