a little fire will not be a problem for Him.

Nor will it be if we are eaten by sharks,..:)

Reminds me of Martha and Lazarus (when they were not worried about Jesus raising the dead, but what about the smell. How Human we are....:)

So much for the ill-begotten concept of eternal torment of physical bodies in fire.
Hmmm . . . interesting. I know there are some faiths who are against cremation for whatever reason.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between accidentally dying in a fire and voluntarily choosing to be cremated. I have to wonder if they're against the act or the thinking behind the act . . .

That said, I don't think there is anything wrong with cremation.

This sounds like legalism to me. There's nothing ungodly about the practice. Heck, I might do it just to save space. Personally I'd like to see a Scriptural defense of the idea that cremation is sinful, since I don't think that one exists.

I think some people might be against cremation because it happens to be practiced in some false religions, most notably Hinduism. Then again, there are other false religions that practice burial, such as Judaism and Islam. I see nothing characteristically Christian about either practice. My guess is that it is a cultural practice that has become absorbed into certain churches.

false religions...[]...such as Judaism

I wouldn't call Judaism a false religion.
  • Without Judaism Christianity is foundationless.
  • Judaism, as with Christianity, is in a state that has not reached its full fruition.
  • Also, both end up at the same place-at the feet of the Messiah.

Considering the physical body we have now is but a shell and will perish. Our eternal life will be lived out in a resurrected state body-I do not think it matters whether you are buried or cremated. This is based on 1 Cor 15:42-44

In my opinion, that's nonsense. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that. Futhermore, the Bible says that you can't lose your salvation.

since the body at the time of death becomes an empty useless shell why would God really care if we bury it, burn it or drop it in the sea. I remember when I was a kid being told by a nun that cremation was a sin, that we had to be buried in holy ground in order to be raised again by Jesus.. but now cremation seems to be ok in the catholic church..I did ask about those buried at sea and was told that they wouldn't make it to heaven either but then that was in the late 50's when I was taught that...

Hey folks, it is not the body of flesh that counts with Jesus. Remember that it is always the spirit, or more specifically, the condition of the spirit at the instant of death, that counts. Nothing else matters.

Upon our resurrection our spirits will be given completely new and spiritually perfect bodies. Our old bodies do not matter a wit. And, if we are still living at the instant that our Lord returns in the clouds, then our bodies will be instantly changed from fleshy to spiritual.

As Jesus so carefully taught us, let the dead bury the dead. Why? Because the dead do not matter, that's why. If they are God's, then the important part will still be God's. The shell just does not matter to Him, so why should it matter to us?

Sorry for rambling on with this one....

In all fairness to that pastor, it is a long held belief that burning someone's dead body is not scriptural. As a matter of fact, those that were burned in the Bible, were burned as a judgement upon them. Hence the reason for burning people at the stake, or burning those magic books in the Book of Acts.

Here is an article that discusses why cremation is not Biblical, from what appears to be a reliable source. At least you can find out where they're coming from:
Why Cremation Is Unscriptural

On the other hand, no one says being cremated will send you to hell. That's a little overboard.

The one scripture that accounts of bodies being burned but not under judgement was that of King Saul and his two sons. The article I cite above mentions that a teacher of Hebrew says that the word was not burn but rather annoint.

However, the great Adam Clarke- Theologian, student of history and scholar of the languages of the Bible and the manuscripts of his day, for some reason says nothing about a mis-translation of this word- and believe me, he would have felt free to mention it!

This is what Adam Clarke says about
1 Samuel 31:12
"And burnt them there—It has been denied that the Hebrews burnt the bodies of the dead, but that they buried them in the earth, or embalmed them, and often burnt spices around them, etc. These no doubt were the common forms of sepulture, but neither of these could be conveniently practiced in the present case. They could not have buried them about Beth-shan without being discovered; and as to embalming, that was most likely out of all question, as doubtless the bodies were now too putrid to bear it. They therefore burnt them, because there was no other way of disposing of them at that time so as to do them honor; and the bones and ashes they collected, and buried under a tree or in a grove at Jabesh."

Now Saul was not known to have been a man of honor before God, and perhaps God allowed this dishonorable thing to fall upon him and his sons because of that, but that is only wild speculation on my part.
