• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm just looking for some advice...

One of my best friend's has battled with a crack addiction for about 20 years. He goes months without it, but he always goes back to smoking it.

He swears he's ready to change. He's going to NA meetings and getting accountability partners and such. This is just the beginning though, I know that.

Does he need other help too, or can NA be enough to help him stay clean?

Any advice and/or prayers are appreciated!

NA/AA can be enough if there is a true willingness. Professional help is rarely beneficial for addicts and alcoholics because we tend to be less than honest with the medical field. Not intentionally so but because there is so little idea of what it is that motivates us to continue drinking and drugging in spite of the negative consequences.

The great thing about reading your post was hearing that your friend WANTS to change. To me the hardest part about stopping drugs is actually admitting that you need the help and then actually wanting the help. Once you accept the help its amazing how much people are willing to help you. So just so you know the worst is over. Its still gonna be a hard road but the hardest part is over.
Getting him into NA will work fine if he sticks to working steps.

I'll be praying for ya!

God Bless,
Sarah

Yes, NA is good, but it's not the best. There are Christ-centered groups that have been developing. I'm starting one at my church in January. There are various programs (both Christian and non-Christian). Most missions have a long term program. Sometimes, it is necessary for people to remove themselves from their usual environment and to commit a period of time in their life for God to help them to deal with things. I could go on and on about the programs and various other resources. I pray that your friend does not have to go through all the changes that I did of going back and forth to drug use for 15 years. I have been more enlightened over the last 7 months then ever before. I used to go to NA, AA, and CA at the beginning of my quest for sobriety. I have gotten a lot of help in my own personal studies on addiction, the online course from "Setting Captives Free", and a book entitled "Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave". I was be very glad to here from your friend. Please, have him send me a message. The oonly addiction that I want to hold on to is to be used by God. I long for the opportunities. I am so glad that He has been changing me into a contributing member of society.
Yours sincerely,
gmadison
