Covenant of Works

I have run into this term when reading on some reformed sites.
I understand there may be some dissension on this.

Can someone give me a simple and short explanation of what it is?
And why the dissension?

The covenant of works was an agreement made between God and Adam where God would provide for man based on man's perfect obedience.
