Couples use prayer to conceive children
Samantha Mielbrecht just couldn't believe it when she conceived her second child last February.
She and her husband, Mark, had already tried to make it happen for a few years. In fact, the Everett couple was about to submit paperwork to adopt a baby from India.
But recently, she suddenly thought: "Hmm, I should have a pregnancy test," and it was positive.
Last January, the Mielbrechts and other 35 couples who had faced infertility went to Northshore Christian Church in Everett to be prayed for.
A year later, many people gathered at the church this weekend to celebrate the power of prayer: 19 couples conceived. Thirteen babies -- including two sets of twins -- were born, and five more are expected this year, said Susan Anderson, who organized the prayer.
"This is amazing. These are miracle babies," said Anderson, 37, of Snohomish.
Some of the couples had struggled with infertility for more than a decade, Anderson said. They also had tried medical solutions such as hormone injections and in vitro fertilization.
"A lot of treatments are very painful and very invasive," said Anderson, who tried different types of medicines before she was prayed for at a church in Bothell and conceived her second child, JohnPaul, in 2000.
Women who have difficulties with pregnancy usually feel ashamed and don't come forward, Anderson said.
But there is hope, she said.
"Our stance is that it doesn't matter what the problem is. We just pray to God for a miracle," she said.
Mielbrecht, who experienced a miscarriage in 2001 when she was 13 weeks into pregnancy, said she was hesitant when Anderson called her last January and suggested attending the prayer meeting.
"I almost didn't go forward," she said, adding she didn't want to draw attention to herself primarily because of the subject.
But now two months after giving birth to Elianna, she said she is glad she stepped forward and happy for the other couples who had been blessed with babies.
"It's not simply a logical answer," she said, "There is a supernatural God factor to it."
