Skipping ahead to verse 13 it is stated again differently.

Romans 7:11-13 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Basically the law which has been given to us by God is good, but that good law given to us by God, shows the sin in our life. The law was given that we may obey it and live pure and holy lives and yet by the very good law given by God it is what we are judged by. Chapter 7 can be very confusing, but a chapter full of so much human turmoil that we feel because of our sin. We desperately want to live holy before God but in this chapter it gives a really cool look in to that struggle. These chapters of Romans are chocked full of so much stuff. I have one commentary on Romans that is nine volumes of around 400 pages each - by D.M. Lloyd-Jones. One could spend years in this book alone.
