  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Could you vote for Mitt Romney?

As a Christian, could you vote for a Mormon for president?
Just because I could vote for a Mormon doesn't mean I could vote for mitt. I live in Massachusetts so seeing the change in his politics from governor to presidential candidate doesn't inspire confidence. Big Dig fiasco doesn't help either.

I don't think I would vote for him, because outside of national defense, abortion and gun control I'm fairly liberal. Generally speaking, I find conservative and neo-conservative politics to be disatrous.

If the Democratic canidate were extremely anti-national defense, pro-life and anti-gun, while a Republican tended to be liberal or even moderate on issues like education, social justice, and the environemnt I would probably vote Republican.

As for religion of the person running for President, I could care less. He could be Muslim, Mormon, Methodist, or Menonite.. I just want to be able to beleive he's a good person with some integrity.

I agree. I don't see a problem with voting for a Mormon.

But I don't know enough about Mitt to make a judgement on what kind of president he would be. I guess I would have to listen to him, and do some reading about him before I could judge on if I would vote for him, just like any other candidate.

Same here. Orin Hatch happens to be one of my favorite senators and he is Mormon as well. I would vote for him for president. I seriously need to learn more about Mitt Romney, though, before I could vote for him, but his being Mormon isn't a factor for me.

Mitt Romney is an empty suit. Unfortunately right now he's being filled out by the Religious Right... but I don't think that they have a particularly good reason to trust him, either.
He once said that he'd be better for gay rights than Ted Kennedy. He doesn't say that now that he's running for President, but people of all political stripe have a very good reason to wonder where his true beliefs lie. He seems to change them to suit his audience.

The Constitution says there shall be no religious test for any federal office. Of course, this only applies to the government. Any citizen has a perfect right to vote for whomever he wants. But not voting for a candidate purely because of religion clearly violates the spirit of how the framers envisioned our government. It's anti-American.

I don't think I can vote for anyone who is named after a piece of sports equipment

And yet, your ideal president is named for shrubbery. Go figure.

I know "Al Gore" sounds like some horror-move villian, but can you at least admit that John Kerry had a presidential-sounding name? :)

My president may be named for shrubbery, but at least he doesn't look like Lurch.

OK - Get ready for the unpopular opinion of the day. . .

I do not think I could vote for him because he is Mormon. This does not mean I think he is not a great human being. I obviously do not know him and cannot judge his character. I have Mormon friends and family members who are all great people.

But, knowing that he is Mormon it makes me think he is terribly gullable. The religion is irrational. Their beliefs make contradictions to the Bible yet they consider the Bible one of their Holy books. Of course they think it was interpreted wrong so that is why it contradicts the other teachings. Below is only one of the many issues I have with Mormonism that would make me weary to vote for a Mormon for our countries highest office.

From Catholic.com (http://www.catholic.com/library/Gods_of_the_Mormon_Church.asp)

"Latter-Day Saints do not believe that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are the only three gods there are. Rather, they believe in (though do not worship) a "plurality" of gods, gods without number, each one ruling his own creation. Thus, the three separate gods who rule our universe are finite in power—they sustain and govern only a tiny portion of all that exists.

The other gods have either preceded or followed the Heavenly Father who organized our world. In fact, men living today on this planet will one day become gods of their own universes. As such, they will mate with heavenly wives, beget spirit children, populate new worlds, and receive the worship and obedience we are now expected to give to our particular, current God."

I know there are many that think that Christianity is irrational too. But, to think you will become a "god" yourself and get your own universe. Really?

If he can believe that, I am concerned he could be talked into a lot of other things.

Maybe he just wants to get an early start by controlling our little universe here in America before he moves on.

You have asked two, separate questions. My two, separate answers are:

1. No, I couldn't bring myself to vote for Romney.

2. Yes, as a Christian, I could vote for a Mormon. I could also vote for a Jew, an atheist, a Wiccan, a Zoroastrian, or an agnostic, if I thought she would make a good president. Not sure about a Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Shinto, Sikh, Greco-Roman Pagan, American Indian or Australian aborigine, but I'm willing to be openminded about the possibility.

I don't take into consideration one's religious views when voting...I'm not electing a spiritual leader but a public servant.

That said, Romney is a classic double talking slick willy lying elitist bum. He was my governor and...well...at the end of his tenure crime in Boston has reached record breaking levels, people are leaving the state in droves, the housing market is in the kisser, and.....it goes on.

Not to mention the fact that while he was governor he spent over 250 days OUT OF STATE.
