• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am eating disordered. I binge eat, and use food to help me cope with uncomfortable emotions. I weigh 300 pounds, and have not had control of my eating since May. Then I lost 12 pounds, but have since gained it all back and then some. I have purged in the past, but refuse to do that anymore.

I know what is triggering my eating, and have tried to change it. I go to Overeaters Anonymous for social support.

Just reaching out to any and all who can relate.

OA has worked miracles for me. More than just social support... to me it is my lifeline. Do you have a sponsor?

Yes, I do have a sponsor. She has been a godsend.

I have managed to be abstinent for four days. It is hard, but I am determined that I will honor God with my body.

Thanks,
Hugs,
Madison :)

I too am an overeater. I believe our disorder is called Binge Eating Disorder (BED), it is different from Bulimia because we don't make ourself purge, we just binge and binge and can't seem to stop and therefore gain tons of weight. I have gained and lost ALOT over the years but mostly gained. I have tried every diet known to man and have even succeeded on some atleast for awhile, but can never stick with it. I get so angry at myself sometimes.I have been in and out of OA also..right now i am out of it. Its so hard to follow a food plan which excludes so many foods. My BED gets me into depression on and off which really makes it hard. I am in depression right now and struggling to get out of this mess. Please keep me in your prayers. I would love to talk with others with BED.

I liked the approuch of Dr.Phil, i don't know if anyone of you all has seen his episodes but i really liked them, the people in the program really seemed to lose weight. A harser method but maby neccessary could be gastric bypass, although i am not qualified to advice over such a thing, it may be a last resort. But don't quote me on that, as i wash my hands in innocent, because it does have a mortality rate which i should warn about.

Anyway, i found a great way to lose weight in a fun way. http://www.redoctane.com/pumpitupbundle.html

This is a dancepad in which you can dance on music :) in a fun way, and lose so much calories while doing it. Basically i think its important to make exersising fun instead of it being a torment. You can choose to go from low level to high level. It's not healthy to be fat, so it must be an integrated part of your life, to start walking a bit. I am actually not really fat at all , but obesity runs in my family and i can do with one meal a day and still become fat :( yikes. But i try to dance and run as much as i can, and fight that horrible feeling of wanting to eat.

eating disorder can sometimes be an 'addiction'... and I agree... whether the addiction is drugs/self injury/eating disorder/whatever... they all have one thing in common... a frantic effort to escape from emotional pain... for me my addiction is the internet... I always use internet to distract me from emotional pain

at the hospital I went to... there was an 'addiction unit'... and in there besides the support for detox/quitting... they also strongly emphasised the emotional support... since emotional pain was the reason behind the addictions... it was important to treat emotional pain... or else relapse was almost garanteed...

we who have addictions become reliant on whatever we're addicted to for emotional escape... and quite often a person who free's himself from one addiction becomes addicted to something else... my mate at the hospital started smoking around the same time she quit alcohol

the real way to treat addictions is to help the person find healthy ways of coping with emotional stress... smokers have a hard time quitting because they don't seek help for emotional problems...

you are binge eating to cope with emotional pain... it would be very difficult to quit this habit if you don't find healthy ways to cope with emotional stress... this is where professional help comes in... have you ever been to counselling or psychotherapy?

My understanding of the terminology is
Anorexia = starvation
Bulimia = gluttony
Bulimiarexia = gluttony + purging
Being lazy we shortened bulimiarexia to bulimic.

Madison,
How is your blood sugar?
Have you been checked for daibetes?
Are you lonely?
Are you horney?
Are you exercising enough?
Are you with people who as a support group will help you stop cramming food into your mouth?:help:
Are you going through menopause?:idea:

There is a program which has a 60 to 80 percent cure rate. It is not OA but OA can be used as a components of it.

You are a psycologist. Are you familiar with this program?

I think I will ask my doctor to check me for diabetes. I am lonely, and haven't had sex since April. I don't exercise enough. I do go to OA. I am perimenopausal. I am not familiar with any program other than OA, so please tell me about the program you are talking about.
