If it does happen the mainstream media reaction will be very interesting.

Indeed,it doesnt fit the caricature painted of pope Francis by the secular media and it will be very interesting to see how`ll go about such news if it`s becoming an reality...

I have to say, If Pope Francis is the one to make this happen when Pope Benedict couldn't, I'll be nothing short of amazed.

It seems like everytime I think Ive come to understand Francis he does something or say something which puts me back to square one...

Puzzling

He is an enigma! But mostly of the media's making. ;)

As an outsider I don't find him all that confusing at all. Francis has been pretty consistent on sticking to the core of Catholic teaching when it comes down to it, but his primary goal seems to be bringing as many as he can to the RCC. If he has to fuzz the edges so to speak to make that happen or speak in slightly more vague language than many are used to after the previous pope, he seems willing to do so, on both the traditional and progressive ends of the spectrum. The media focuses on the latter, and has assumed Francis is some form of progressive (the whole "cool pope" phenomena). But the reality is, it's less to do with progressive-ism, as it is bringing as many souls as he can to the RCC. If this ends up being true, it would be a great example of him doing this on the other end of the spectrum. Though it may quash some of that "cool pope" talk if he does so.

At least that's how I've been seeing it from the sidelines.

The confusion is that Vatican II is pastoral while at the same time containing things that are infallible. It already says in the Appendix of Lumen Gentium that not everything in the document is binding. So if the Vatican were to explain which things in it are not binding it would serve as clarification.

excuse me
but I have never heard of this before
do you mind quoting the document that says that?

Genuine question.

What are the openly defined infallible teachings on matters of faith and morals in vatican 2 that were not defined before v2?

None....that is what made Albion's' first post so stupid.

So lumin gentium says

"the sacred Council defines as binding on the Church only those things in matters of faith and morals which it shall openly declare to be binding."

And yet nothing is binding that was not already binding.

Seems pretty simple really. One should follow the council in as much as one would follow the magisterium and give it due respect and adherance accordingly. However if there is error in the document or misunderstanding in its application there is no binding matter of faith or morals to compel the faithful to adhere to it.

If so then the sspx are not schismatic in the true sense of the word, rather they are in full comunion with rome but in disagrement about a non binding council.

Then recconciliation need only be for the pope to accept that they disagree and acknowledge their right to do so if they believe the council has errors in it so long as they accept the parts of vatican 2 that re-presents previous infallible teaching

Pope Francis may be on the verge of deal with Traditionalists.

Leaked internal memo from Society of St. Pius X says Pope won't require acceptance of Vatican II as a prerequisite to coming back, perhaps as personal prelature.

Continued below.

this part of the response could create new problems:

"Similarly, Schmidberger’s memo asserts that whilst the group would like to 'return from its ‘exile' further discussions would be expected: 'We will not be silent, more over, we will point out the errors by name. Before and after our normalization'.”

if 'not being silent and pointing out the errors' didn't work for Luther, why would it work for him?:swoon:

They are awfully confrontational imo.

agreeed. not much like the repentant son.
I get the impression they pride themselves in their rebellion and are not really wanting to be reunited with the RCC. I had the same impression when Pope Benedict was trying to reason with them.

"no longer speak of recognizing neither the Second Vatican Council nor the legitimacy of the Novus Ordo Missae,”

"No, we cannot force you to accept the Council"

"In its conclusion, the text argues that if “God wants to come to the effective aid of His Church, which is bleeding from a thousand wounds, he has thousands of different means of doing so. One of these is the official recognition of the SSPX through the Roman authorities.”

I know many on here are not big on prophecy but it there is prophecy that the church after its hard trials will be comfortated a great ecumenical council will be held by a great pope that everyone will accept it and the church will be restored to her former glory and shine like never before... if that is through the sspx i dont know but i think we still have many long roads to walk down before then.

I find the sspx to be wonderful catholics who refuse to weaken their faith in the historical church or the power of the defined rite of the mass as if they were somehow lacking. Really good example to faithfulness for all of us
