Corporal Punishment

There was a television documentary a while back about how some Amish fathers use harsh physical punishment on their children. I was deeply saddened and surprised at the report. Perhaps even worse, I started doing research and found evidence that spousal abuse also occurs among the Amish. I cannot explain how people dedicated to pacifism could resort to abusing family members, other than the conservative belief that God has ordained men to be the head of the house.

Prov. 13: 24
He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betime.

Prov. 22:15
Foolishness {is] bound in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Discipline should never be done in anger. Smacking a child across the head or face, pulling his ears, throwing him across the room, pinching or twisting limbs, etc...that is child abuse.

A few solid smacks on the rear end is not child abuse.

That line is old testament. Jesus abolished all that along with stonings and animal sacrifice.

When are you guys going to remember that the death of Jesus spelt a new covenant with God and a message of love and forgiveness and not violence and mass slayings....sheesh! :)

I know that there are some in every group - it does not boil down to being pacifist, but boils down to personal lack of self control. Spousal and child abuse are huge signs of a character defect and they need the Lord Jesus to give them a better way - even among strict Amish.

I used to work as a child protection social worker, and I can tell you that the Mennonites here are rarely, if ever, reported, and my hope is that it's because we practice pacifism in the home - although I'm sure some people here still spank....it's just never become a matter of protection. Where I live, we use alternate methods of discipline so we don't have to use physical punishment.
