  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've never sold anything but I've been thinking about it lately so decided to research copyright law. I inquired at the copyright office about making a product from a bought pattern: Below is the response from the US copyright office.

[copyright office You are allowed to make the craft based on a pattern you purchased for your personal use only. You are not allowed to make multiple copies of that craft and sell them without the permission of the copyright holder of the pattern. Only the copyright holder is allowed to make derivative works or allow someone else to make derivative works of their original work. Please see the link below for information on derivative works.

So I thought I'd share this information with you.

Interesting note: Some of the older craft/painting books allow you to sell your crafts provided you do not claim the pattern as yours. For pleasure or pin money is how it is phrased in some of my books. For instance if you painted a pattern on a box. You could make & paint 12 boxes and sell them all at your local craft fair.

BUT the newer ones don't allow that sort of thing. You are right to say that you need the artist/copyright holders permission.

If you are searching for a craft you could make and sell at local craft fairs or flea markets I would go with the older pattern books. Much less hassle than trying to comply with all the modern day rules & fine print.
