  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Conservative or Liberal literally........

I don’t see any point in pretending that anything was “good” about slavery.
There are many black Christians in the US that would never have been exposed to Christianity if there had been no slave trade. I'm not saying it was good, but got can turn anything good in the end.

Otherwise, he would not have created mankind, knowing what Adam and Eve were going to do.

BTW, slavery has been a part of mankind for millennia. And it is quite common today. But some countries, to their credit, have abolished it. The US and UK are two of them.

I know the point you’re making. Choosing slavery to avoid being illegitimate and exposed to drugs isn’t much of a choice though.
No, it isn't. But it's a better choice. My point is that in many ways and in some places, blacks are no better off and, frankly, are worse off than many slaves were. I'm not saying slavery was good. I'm saying for many the life today is worse. It's especially hard on black male lifespans. And the bastardy rate went from around 20% in the 1950's to over 70% now. And when men only have a single mom, they are very probably headed for prison - or an early grave.

I can see that somewhat for many young black males the life expectancy is in their 20s because of gun violence

As Joseph said what you meant for evil God used for good but I’m not going to argue for slavery being a good thing

I should throw this out: a lot of people in history have sold themselves into indentured slavery to survive. In a way, I think we have a new word for it - employee. And that point is really driven home when some people are paid so little they work two or three jobs just to make ends meet. Basically they work and sleep - just like a slave. And just like slaves, many of them have cruel managers.

But modern slaves have a TV and Smart phone.

I worked like that most of my life, overtime when I was at the PD and I had a pressure washing business and was a Youth Minister while I worked for the Sherif’s Department. I didn’t consider it slavery. I felt that getting government benefits as long as you voted for a particular party was more like slavery (with a good master)
I now have a job where I only work 40 hours a week (3 and 1/2 days) and it’s great.

That's akin to equating the holocaust with the establishment of Israel. We wouldn't laud it under any circumstances. And I can only surmise you've never read a slave bible given the comparison.

Yup. I have to confess that one thing that changed my mind was retiring a few years ago. And what sealed the deal was open heart surgery a little over a year ago. I'm living quite comfortably on SS. But it's because I moved to a low cost of living area and have zero debt. But in a way, I feel sad for all the people doing what I did for many decades.

And yes, it doesn't "feel" like slavery, but I see it this way: Back in the 60's, what was the difference between a man who lived in Moscow and a man that lived in queens, both of which never moved? The man from queens "thinks" he can move. But the truth is, he's been conditioned to not really think it should be done, so he lives in an imaginary cage while the guy in Moscow lives in a real cage.

I became the head of security at a hospital in 2009 and even though I was on salary I didn’t have to put in a lot of extra hours until Covid hit. They really took advantage of me through the pandemic.
I went to work at a much larger hospital in November 2022 and now I’m a supervisor but it’s strictly 40 hours a week unless I request to work overtime.
I work 3 and 1/2 days and I’m off 3 and 1/2 days every week.

A mix of the two. I'm generally enthusiastic about new technologies and innovation, but I also know the law of unintended consequences. I prefer to avoid political idealism. To see what happens when we try to impose a thought leader or political leader's visions of utopia on an unwilling populace, look no further than the wars and genocides of the 20th century.

Regarding issues like climate change, show me verifiable data and I gladly help the cause. Put an activist Chicken Little in front of me, however, and I ignore their cries that the sky is falling. For the record, I agree that climate change is real. I reduce, reuse, recycle, and strive to leave my little corner of this planet better than I found it. I just think alarmists do more harm than good. The data, gathered slowly and methodically over time, supports the fact that we have an impact on the health of our planet. It is a situation that should be handled thoughtfully, implementing changes in a slow and methodical way that minimizes potential adverse effects.

The two major parties are beginning to switch poles (again).
Democrats will be come the “Conservative Party”, as they defend the legacies of FDR, HST, JFK/LBJ, WJC and BHO from the onslaughts of the (then) Liberal Party of “new ideas”, the GOP (or whatever name they switch to).

Say what you want but Donald Trump took the Republicans away from (real-actual) “conservatism” and substituted right-wing-populism and many still haven’t noticed the switch.

Be careful of Political parties that warn of a threat to Democracy while they themselves arrest their political opponents, work with Tech companies to censor those that disagree with them, allow men in women’s sports & bathrooms, encourage child mutilation surgeries, fire Federal workers & nurses for not getting experimental gene therapies, threaten to expand the Supreme Court and eliminate the Electoral College, cause rampant inflation, increase the cost of groceries by 26 percent, allow 11 million people to illegally cross the border, and push the entire World close to World War III.

That's quite a straw man. But rest assured, if I ever encounter such a political party, I'll be sure to avoid it.

It must be nice to have someone who can articulate one’s thoughts better, (of course this has nothing to do with what I posted), but one has to take what one can find and maybe wait for seven plus weeks.

There is literally zero comparison between being somebody who has to work for a living and somebody who’s a slave. Claiming otherwise is bananas.

There are many types of slavery. One is called indentured slavery. You are right they are not exactly the same, but still.

So apparently I woke up from my nap in a timeline where what Rob Schneider thinks about carries weight in a political discussion. Not Roy Scheider, which I would get to a certain degree. Rob Schneider.

The one I went to sleep in said that actors should stick to acting because nobody cares about what they think. Admittedly a big ask for Rob Schneider as it is on the best of days, but still.

Not remotely the same. It’s like comparing the dental and oral surgical experiments they did in concentration camps with going to a dentist today to get a root canal.
