  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

ok, this might be kinda early to start worrying about this, but i am. i was brought up as Catholic, and so i grew up that way and everything, but now I'm not so sure I agree w/ the religion. I asked Jesus into my heart and Im a born again Christian as of about 2 years ago, and I'm believing different things now than the Catholic religion, and they just seem "right", u know? This started from best friend, who I'm very thankful of that she talked to me about this and got me into it. (She's a Protestant, not necessarily the religion that I want, but maybe one closer to that one). But my problem is that I dont want to get confirmed at my catholic church when I'm in 11th grade, but my mom is making me get confirmed and then she said I can figure out what I want to do after that, as in changing religions and all. So I dont know what I should do. I guess I could just wait, no biggie, but i dont know. I know there are going to be a lot of different opinions because of all the different religions and all on here, but I figured I'd give it a shot and see what you all think. All I've really done is prayed that God directs me in the right path. :prayer: Thanks for listening,

~Kelly

Hi Kelly and welcome here. I think this is a good place to discuss the kind of questions you have. There are many forums, where to participate e.g. Christian advice, for new Christians or Christian teens... Take a look and post your thoughts where you think is the place for it.

If I understood right there is some time for you to think about the matter and discuss it with your parents. I hope you'll find some way to agree what to do. I understand your mom (being a mom of two myself) but I can also see your point of view. Religion is so sensitive and personal issue that it's difficult to discuss it in peace and harmony. But as I see it we Christians (Catholics, Protestants, Pentecostals...) have the same God, there is only some differences in doctrine. God bless you.

Hello and welcome to CF! I think you have found the right place! :)

Have you discussed the possibility of the RCIA program with your Mom? In this case, you could skip the confirmation in the 11th grade (if you are still feeling then the way you feel now) and go through the RCIA program further down the line, in life, if that is what you want to do. In other words, just because you miss out on confirmation doesn't mean you are thrown out of the Catholic Church. ;) Really, confirmation is supposed to be exactly that: a confirmation of your faith in the Catholic teachings. Personally I don't feel you should go through confirmation if that isn't in your heart.

Being 14 years old, many questions will arise over the next couple years and many of your opinions will likely change between now and then. I would recommend you learn what you can about different religions, their beliefs and teachings, between now and 11th grade. By then perhaps you will have a clearer view of what you believe and what religion you feel fits you best. In the meantime, try not to bring it up with your mother anymore. It is far enough off that you really aren't going to get anywhere by discussing it now. I only see that causing ill feelings and contention between you and your mother. First, solidify your beliefs, then when the time comes you can have the appropriate conversation with your mother.

Incidentally, I was also raised Catholic, even attending Catholic schools for much of my education. I was confirmed, too. I had some questions and some doubts, but it wasn't until I was 28 that I left the Catholic Church for a church that better "suits me" and feels right. So, if you'd ever like to drop me a line through PM (private messaging), please feel free. :)

Enjoy your stay here at CF. I know you will meet many wonderful people and learn much, too.

HI THERE.

I WENT THROUGH SOMETHING SIMILAR AS YOU ARE GOING THROUGH.
HERE IN SOUTH AFRICA WE HAVE A TYPE OF CHURCH WHERE YOU ALSO MUST BE CONFIRMED IN 11TH GRADE. BUT FIRST YOU MUST GO THROUGH A SERIES OF TESTS AND EXAMS. I WAS NOT READY TO GIVE MY HEART TO THE LORD AT THAT TIME, SO I REFUSED TO UNDERGO THOSE TESTS ETC, BECAUSE I DON'T BELIEVE THAT GOD WILL RECIEVE YOU ONLY IF YOU'VE PASSED THOSE TESTS.
THAT'S JUST PLAIN SILLY!!
ITS ALSMOST LIKE LYING TO GOD IN CHURCH.
GOD HAD SPOKEN TO MY HEART, LEADING MY TO THE TRUTH.
I AM NOW A NEW BORN, WATER BAPTIZED CHRISTIAN.
I DON'T FOLLOW MAN MADE RULES AND REGULATIONS.
I ONLY FOLLOW THE WORD OF MY LORD IN THE BIBLE.

WHEN YOU ARE CONFUSED, TURN TO GOD.
ONLY HE UNDERSTANDS...
ASK AND RECIEVE.

GOD BLESS YOU.
AMEN

thank you all so much, u helped! To be confirmed you go through 3 years of confirmation classes, and I dont know if I should go through those classes if I'm not going to end up getting confirmed anyway, you know? But I guess going through the classes might help me to figure out if I would want to go through w/ it. But as of now i dont think I want to. But like someone said, my views could change i guess. thank you all again, I appreciate your advice and replies! :)

Hello, Kelly.

There are Catholic teens here who you might enjoy chatting with.

(As opposed to some old guy like me. :))

Here is the Catholic board. No committment to remain Catholic.
http://www.christianforums.com/f26

If there are any questions about the Catholic faith, please ask us. There are many knowledgable and friendly folks on the Catholic board.

And many knowledgsable and friendly folks on the other boards too.

I do warn you, however, that you might want to avoid the more heated board where discussions and debates occur.

Peace be with you.

oh ya.. whats the RCIA program someone was talking about?
The RCIA program is a program for adults to be confirmed into the Catholic Church. It is often times for adults who are converting to Catholicism, but is also for those who grew up Catholic but weren't confirmed for whatever reason.

;) Firtst off, I pray I am putting this reply in the right place:pray: Something that will most likely help you is this , when you are asking people for answers to your search for God, ask the people why they give that answer to your question.example :Why do you beleive that Jesus Christ ever even lived and walked the earth? a well studied answer could be the Bible tells us so , or they could answer there studies of secular history has revealed beyond doubt the life of Christ his Death, burial and resurection then they should be ready to answer exactly why they came to this beleif.
The Scripture Commands us to be ready with a answer for the hope of our calling in season and out also to study to show our self a workman approved to God. I sincerely hope this information will help you in your Journey

Kelly,

Amen to the brother from South Africa. Religion sometimes makes us follow mans rules and not Gods rules. The Bible does not lie, read the word and it will give you strength.
I have a t-shirt that reads "If all else fails, read the instructions" it has a bible on it.
Being righteous is not always easy. Remember if it's not in the bible and the church makes you pray or honor it, that's not right. Be strong and stick to your guns.

Blessings
