I'm not so sure that being conceited means that you are too confident. Some of the most conceited people I know have actually been very insecure. I think conceit is often a cover up.
I was actually talking to a former student of mine. She's in 9th grade now and I taught her when she was in 8th grade. You can tell from talking to her how much more mature she's gotten.
But she said that she used to be like that and make fun of people mainly because she didn't really belive in herself and that by making fun of people she was trying to convince herself and others that she did.
And she said though that once she started really believing in herself then she didn't feel the need to rip on other people.
I thought that was a very grown up thing to say for a 14 year old girl.
