We will never rise above our confession.
If we confess that the world has us defeated then we will be constantly subject to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. But if we confess that we can do all things through Him, then we will overcome the world (and all that is in the world) by our faith.

I just got a major revelation from what you just said.

Thanks!

Repentance, hmm.

I never found that "confessing my sin" was good for my soul.

For one thing it seemed a pretty pointless excercise really, since God already knew! :o

I'd solemnly struggle through all my failings, then I would feel so ashamed, condemned and hopeless about all these things I had dredged up, and be so afraid of God that I'd turn away from Him in fear!
The precise opposite of what repentance was meant to do!
(Yes, yes, I knew well all the scriptures saying He would forgive me, but...:sigh: )

Years of depression probably warped my ability to do it properly or something, but that was what happened whenever I tried. It was no good.

Coming here has been such a blessing, and this is just one of the ways.
Here I was told to stop trying to turn away from sin but to instead to turn toward Jesus. He freely forgives, always, every time, to the utmost.

It works, that's all I can say. Such an apparently small difference, yet it meant everything to me.

Get my eyes off my mess and inability, and instead fix my gaze on His loving countenance.

I might not sin any less, but I am walking towards Him instead of hiding, and that is such a vast improvement I can't begin to tell you. (Oh, well, I tried anyway! LOL! :D )

God bless, love Sue

Sue!

Yes, I know what you mean. Where are our eyes and minds focused? The enemy will be throwing those stumbling blocks our way and want us to be so focused on this 'battle' and our 'tripping'...it'll take up every bit of our attention. And if we spend our time in prayer going over every failing and every trip....what was the focus of our prayer? What the enemy has thrown our way.

But let's look at what Jesus threw our way! Forgiveness and every single tool and jewel we would need to reign, rule, conquer and be an active participant in His kingdom!
If my prayer time is spent worshipping, praising, thanking, and receiving more of HIM...then the attention went to best place. Jesus...not the enemy.

1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Just a reminder about the topic of the thread:

My point is that this verse is not for Christians.

Why confess our sins when we sin?

I placed this question here because I believe WOF people can best understand this.

I mean, if you fall sick, do you confess your sickness?

So if you sin, why should yo confess your sin?

1 John 1:9 is for the gnostics, who were saying that there is no such thing as sin.

So John was telling these people -- if you say you have no sin, then you are lying. But if you confess yours sins, God will forgive you and you will have fellowship with us believers.

But Christians have taken this verse for themselves, and practising confession of sins from every Fri to every night to every minute to every time you have a bad thought. One could go crazy doing this if taken to the extreme.

This has caused the church to be inward looking. Looking at the flesh, the old Adam, instead of at Christ, the new Adam, (as He is so are we) and His perfect work.

Do you believe once a person is saved they NEVER SIN after that?

Or do you believe the Holy Spirit convicts a Christian IF they sin?

When are sinners supposed to confess their sins and what is different about them before and after they confess their sins? In other word when does a sinner confess and what is the advantage to the sinner when he confesses?

Do you believe once a person is saved they NEVER SIN after that?

Everyone knows that every Christian still sins after he becomes a Christian.

SO Jesus DID NOT die for our sins in terms of sinful actions and deeds, but He died for our sin (singular noun) in terms of the consequences of sin.

IOW, we are dead to the CONSEQUENCES of sin (condemnation/punishment/hell) but not the ability to sin.

Or do you believe the Holy Spirit convicts a Christian IF they sin?

No where in the Bible does it say that the Holy Spirit convicts the believer of sin.

The verse:

John 16:8-11
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Here the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit convicts people of 3 things:

1. The sin of not believing in Him. (Are Christians guilty of this sin? No, because they believe in Jesus.)

2. Righteousness because He is not on earth anymore. Jesus is not physically here to tell you that you are clean and righteous by His blood, but the Holy Spirit is.

3. Judgment because the devil has been judged. IOW, the Holy Spirit tells people, "Look, Christ has defeated the devil. He has been judged!"

So no where in the Bible does it say that when you sin, eg, have a bad thought or shouted at someone, the Holy Spirit in you convicts you of that sin.

I don' t know this because I don't know every Christian.

IOW, we are dead to the CONSEQUENCES of sin (condemnation/punishment/hell) but not the ability to sin.

If you commit a murder, you're still go jail. If you persist in sin, your heart will condemn you and you will lose confidence that God will answer your prayer. These are consequences.

Or do you believe the Holy Spirit convicts a Christian IF they sin?

The Holy spirit sensitizes Christians to sin.

of judgment -- The devil is judged, not believers.

If you persist in sin, your heart will condemn you and you will lose confidence that God will answer your prayer.

of righteousness -- The Holy Sprit convicts believers OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, not sins.

:)

This was supposed to be a no-brainer. Every Christian still sins. Paul said that anything that is not of faith is sin. So even your worries, doubts and fears are sins. In fact, these are the 'bigger' sins.

If you commit a murder, you're still go jail.

Yes of course. But what's your point?

If you persist in sin, your heart will condemn you and you will lose confidence that God will answer your prayer.

Yes. But the Holy Spirit is not the one condemning you. We have a conscience. We know it when we sin. You don't need a revelation from the Holy Spirit to know that you are sinful. But you need a revelation from the Holy Spirit to know that you are righteous, in spite of your sins. That's what the gospel is about.

These are consequences.

Yes, but I'm not talking about these consequences.

The Holy spirit sensitizes Christians to sin.

That's not Bible. Chapter and verse please.

HI ANDREW :)

Perhaps I have misunderstood you

You said
Andrew said:

Since you believe this, then surely you must have sinned some time after you became a Christian , just as we ALL have.

That is why I mentioned the verse

1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Since that is true then IF we DONT then we would NOT be forgiven.

So IF we have sinned we should do as it says and confess our sin. If we are truly sorry we are forgiven - its as simple as that.

It sounds as if you do not interpret it that way. I agree with and enjoy many of your posts but on this matter I pray you see this is what the BIBLE is saying because I am very concerned about you if you have never confessed anything you have even done wrong after you were saved.

But which ever way you choose to believe , I will not argue about it but only speak what the Word says and pray.

God bless you
