(((Amen!))) PTL Jesus!LittleRocketBoy said:We will never rise above our confession.
If we confess that the world has us defeated then we will be constantly subject to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. But if we confess that we can do all things through Him, then we will overcome the world (and all that is in the world) by our faith.

Are you joking? The Lord is my banner said:Repentance, hmm.
I never found that "confessing my sin" was good for my soul.
For one thing it seemed a pretty pointless excercise really, since God already knew! :o
I'd solemnly struggle through all my failings, then I would feel so ashamed, condemned and hopeless about all these things I had dredged up, and be so afraid of God that I'd turn away from Him in fear!
The precise opposite of what repentance was meant to do!
(Yes, yes, I knew well all the scriptures saying He would forgive me, but...)
Years of depression probably warped my ability to do it properly or something, but that was what happened whenever I tried. It was no good.
Coming here has been such a blessing, and this is just one of the ways.
Here I was told to stop trying to turn away from sin but to instead to turn toward Jesus. He freely forgives, always, every time, to the utmost.![]()
It works, that's all I can say. Such an apparently small difference, yet it meant everything to me.
Get my eyes off my mess and inability, and instead fix my gaze on His loving countenance.
I might not sin any less, but I am walking towards Him instead of hiding, and that is such a vast improvement I can't begin to tell you. (Oh, well, I tried anyway! LOL!)
God bless, love Sue

My point is that this verse is not for Christians.
Why confess our sins when we sin?
I placed this question here because I believe WOF people can best understand this.
I mean, if you fall sick, do you confess your sickness?
So if you sin, why should yo confess your sin?
1 John 1:9 is for the gnostics, who were saying that there is no such thing as sin.
So John was telling these people -- if you say you have no sin, then you are lying. But if you confess yours sins, God will forgive you and you will have fellowship with us believers.
But Christians have taken this verse for themselves, and practising confession of sins from every Fri to every night to every minute to every time you have a bad thought. One could go crazy doing this if taken to the extreme.
This has caused the church to be inward looking. Looking at the flesh, the old Adam, instead of at Christ, the new Adam, (as He is so are we) and His perfect work.

Do you believe once a person is saved they NEVER SIN after that?
Or do you believe the Holy Spirit convicts a Christian IF they sin?
Andrew said:Everyone knows that every Christian still sins after he becomes a Christian.
SO Jesus DID NOT die for our sins in terms of sinful actions and deeds, but He died for our sin (singular noun) in terms of the consequences of sin.
IOW, we are dead to the CONSEQUENCES of sin (condemnation/punishment/hell) but not the ability to sin.
No where in the Bible does it say that the Holy Spirit convicts the believer of sin.
The verse:
John 16:8-11
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Here the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit convicts people of 3 things:
1. The sin of not believing in Him. (Are Christians guilty of this sin? No, because they believe in Jesus.)
2. Righteousness because He is not on earth anymore. Jesus is not physically here to tell you that you are clean and righteous by His blood, but the Holy Spirit is.
3. Judgment because the devil has been judged. IOW, the Holy Spirit tells people, "Look, Christ has defeated the devil. He has been judged!"
So no where in the Bible does it say that when you sin, eg, have a bad thought or shouted at someone, the Holy Spirit in you convicts you of that sin.
Everyone knows that every Christian still sins after he becomes a Christian.
IOW, we are dead to the CONSEQUENCES of sin (condemnation/punishment/hell) but not the ability to sin.
Or do you believe the Holy Spirit convicts a Christian IF they sin?
of judgment -- The devil is judged, not believers.
of righteousness -- The Holy Sprit convicts believers OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, not sins.
Godown said:I don' t know this because I don't know every Christian.
If you commit a murder, you're still go jail.
If you persist in sin, your heart will condemn you and you will lose confidence that God will answer your prayer.
These are consequences.
The Holy spirit sensitizes Christians to sin.
