  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would it be considered sacreligious to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation twice is a few days, confessing to different priests the same sins? Would you need to point out that they were before your last good confession?

Oh, and on a side-note about confession that doesn't deserve it's own thread, how much of the words of absolution does the priest have to say for the absolution to be valid? Can he just say, "I absolve you from your sins..." or is the preamble ("God the Father of Mercies...may God give you pardon and peace..." necessary?

Thanks. :)

Not sure about the second part, but with regards to the first part, I'm not sure that it would be sacreligious, but I don't think that it would be proper. Is there a particular reason why you want to confess the same sins twice?

Well I went today, but tomorrow is the First Friday of the month. :)

My other reason was feeling really bad for the sins, but I realise that the one absolution is sufficient.

Once confessed the and absolved that is it. No need to go a second time to confess. You could go to confession and tell the priest that you have already confessed this particular sin. You could ask for spiritual direction in regards to this sin.

Going to confession isn't just for confessing a sin but also for spiritual direction. If you still feel bad about this sin you could go to confession a second time not for absolution since were already given this but for spiritual direction.

Peace

Yes, it is sacriligeous, if you know what you're doing, just as a second baptism would be. It's telling God He didn't do it right the first time.

Confessing something for spiritual direction is fine, or mentioning that you've confessed it before and have an ongoing problem with that sin.

It is actually grave matter to re-confess sins already confessed. I often confess several times a week- it is fine to confess imperfections if you haven't commited any sins...

First Frday/Saturday devotions are fulfilled by receiving confession a week on either side of the day BTW

And a priest needs only to say "Ego te absolvo...."- "I absolve you of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit...."

Sort of on this line of thought, what if you made a deal with god (probably a sin) and then break the promise, confess it, break it again, etc, do you have to keep confessing the deal with god every time you break the promise?
why am I making deals with God?? I would think unless under Obedience of some sort- that promises to God are not binding by sin-- meaning that it is not a sin to break our promise, unless it is a covenentual relationship (marriage, holy orders. promising to raise our children Catholic, etc.) or we are under obedience- through a religious superior- that it is not sinful....

Isn't it good to accuse ourselves of our past sins also, after confessing our sins since our last good celebration of Penance?

You only want to accuse yourself of past sins, if they weren't confessed specifically, and come to mind specifically (like you have a specific recollection of being disobedient to your parents- rather than just a general remembrance of being disobedient- does that make ense?)-- and if they were omitted on purpose- well that would need to be confessed....

I don't understand. Maybe I should be more specific. Say in a time of fear you make a promise/deal to God, "God, if you get me out of this I promise I will never do [such and such] again." Now if you get through the situation and then do the thing you promised not to do, do you need to confess the promise you made to God every time you do the thing? Because I feel like having made that promise makes the sinful act worse. Does that make sense?

Hi everyone:)

As you can see, I'm brand new to the forums and so please don't take anything i say very seriously:blush: I wanted to add to this topic because, prior to reading this thread, i came across some very interesting and confusing material precisely on this subject- confessing the same sins twice. It comes from the catholic encyclopedia at newadvent.org- i'm not sure how orthodox this site is...

WHAT SINS ARE TO BE CONFESSED
While mortal sin is the necessary matter of confession, venial sin is sufficient matter, as are also the mortal sins already forgiven in previous confessions...In the constitution "Inter cunctas" (17 Feb., 1304), Benedict XI, after stating that penitents who had confessed to a priest belonging to a religious order are not obliged to reiterate the confession to their own priest, adds: "Though it is not necessary to confess the same sins over again, nevertheless we regard it as salutary to repeat the confession, because of the shame it involves, which is a great part of penance; hence we strictly enjoin the Brothers (Dominicans and Franciscans] to admonish their penitents and in sermons 'exhort them that they confess to their own priests at least once a year, assuring them that this will undoubtedly conduce to their spiritual welfare" (Denzinger, "Enchir.", 470). St. Thomas gives the same reason for this practice: the oftener one confesses the more is the (temporal) penalty reduced; hence one might confess over and over again until the whole penalty is cancelled, nor would he thereby offer any injury to the sacrament" (IV Sent., d. xvii, q. 3, sol. 5 ad 4).

So does this mean that it is ok to confess our sins more than once? Or am I misreading this passage entirely??? Or is newadvent not a reliable source...? I'm kinda confused about this whole re-confessing thing myself:confused:

As a sidenote, i think i read in Bl Anne Catherine Emmerich's 'Dolorous Passion' that, prior to her death, she confessed doing a certain act although she had already confessed to this same act many times before...I don't know if that adds any weight to the argument...?

Anyone have ideas?
