  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you're on a tight budget, take a look at dell refurbished systems. They're much cheaper, and still reliable. Generally you can find them cheaper then I could build them.
I used to build PC's and sell them but companies like Dell were nothing to compete with so I gave it up and when I needed to replace a system of mine this past summer I folded and bought a Dell Dimmension 2350 and sooped it up to what I wanted it to be......Sadly, 2 months later I had to have the processor fan replaced because it was defective and now I have to have the CD-RW drive replaced because it's not working all the time.......Dell can be reliable, but Dude I think I Got a Dud!!! :sigh:

$199.98 @ Wall-mart

It all really depends on what you need the computer for. For many, the above deal is fine. I still make money building specialty workstations/networks/servers/game rigs for people but for many things I may do, a $200 dollar computer is fine.

Not bad, for those who don't know anything about computers just keep in mind there is no modem, no monitor, no floppy drive, no cd burner, and it's a Linex Based....so if you want windows you are going to have to purchase windows.....Also, If you do put windows on it I'd recommend uping the ram, XP takes 128mb min to run properly and more for programs to run correctly......

Yes it has 10/100 Ethernet for broadband Internet. If you are stuck on dial-up then spend the $10 for a modem (not a winmodem) for your Internet needs.

If you are reading this, you may already have a monitor. If you are looking to buy a full system with a monitor for a gift to someone, there are plenty of monitors on the market to choose from. It's always better to buy the monitor sepretly since it is the most important part of your computer system. It's the part of the system you stare at for countless hours.

Actually many applications that run on Windows run on this operating system as well. This operating system is based on UNIX which is old as dirt and extremely reliable. Microsoft admitted recently that Linux/UNIX systems are more secure than any of their server operating systems. And for those apps that don't run you can find a worthy if not better alternative and often for free. There are tens of thousands of applications that run on this system and many new apps released every day.

As I said, it all really depends on what you need it for. Btw I am viewing these forums and typing this up on a system like this. I have many needs and many systems but this system suits most of my needs entirely.

Other than this, if I were ever to buy and not build, I'd be looking at Alienware since I like game rigs alot. I can build better though :D

I was speaking of a 56k modem when I said no modem.....just wanted to clarify......:D I wasn't trying to dog that deal, I just wanted to make sure people understood that they would not be getting those items so if they wanted them they would have to purchase them......considering it will cost about $150 for most people (the one's that don't know how to shop for deals online), it might be better to just go with a system from Dell for $499 for everything and honestly it would be a much better system......The one advertized is a good starter for someone who wants to customize it into something more though.....It has potential :)

Sure, a mid priced Dell would be better than a basic bare bones computer just as a Alienware computer is better than a Dell. Of the three though, I'd spend the cash and go with Alienware since Dell now has lousy tech support since they outsourced to low wage countries. That sure did make alot of people mad.

In all reality, next monitor I buy I'll spend at least twice as much money on it compared to what I spend on every thing else. If I got a full new system for $500 from Dell it would cost me $1500. If I went with Alienware thats $2500 easy. Not everyone needs to buy a new monitor each time they get a computer. I spent alot on this monitor and may use it on my next main system. You may be able to find a 17 inch monitor at bestbuy for $50 if you need one. Deals are everywhere.

For a while I was building faith in your statements, until this statement here and your comments on the Gimp.

That computer mentioned in the OP has no potential. I've worked on them. They are made out of garbage components and everything is integrated onto the mainboard. Upgrade potential is virtually nil.

Like I said in my previous post, Dell makes some good computers, but this isn't one of them.

Not to mention they have absolutely terrible tech support like Durelen said. You'd think for a company that's gone bankrupt three times that they'd have learned their lesson by now.

I didn't want to start an argument because people will believe what they want to, honestly, I see it as being a piece of garbage....as for GIMP, I was only telling what their own site said about it......

What are some of the lower priced good computers that Dell makes? I thought the Dimension 4600 looked decent, but most computers sound good until one cracks the case. I tried to find a lower priced computer to recommend, because it seemed from Blake's answers that they'd have around $500 to spend and would have to get a complete system, monitor and all.

I have a Dimension 2350....I believe that they are now being sold as the 2400 series, probably because they have been using 2350 for so long that they just needed to change the series number because there was such a large range of systems on the 2350 line already.........I got my 2350 for $499, but I also added some stuff to it before it shipped so it came out to $579 or so.......
